Random thoughts about Snellville stuff...

Since it's Friday, I thought I would allow myself some random thoughts and observations.
Not that I think any of my thoughts are earth-shattering, but here's what's in my walnut sized brain today.

Odum Street in Snellville looks terrible (it's the street that runs between South Gwinnett High School and Westminister Presbyterian Church and a bank) ... I don't mean this as a reflection on any of the homeowners there - their yards and gardens look beautiful! In major contrast to the condition of the road. It is so patched up and bumpy it's ridiculous.

In my opinion, Odum St is in the worst condition of any street in the city of Snellville. The pavement has those squiggly black lines of tar on it, which I think are signs to mark a street for replacement/repair, but I'm not sure. I hope so.

The Snellville Post Office's parking lot on Oak Road is still too small. I was hoping someone would magically enlarge it overnight, but no luck. A long time resident of Snellville told me that the post office was already too small by the time it was built. Everyone chuckled, but deep inside, we were feeling the pain.

On a side note, the children of Snellville continue to enjoy the fun of playing with the stanchions (the support poles that hold the line markers). For your convenience, the stanchions are available at both the Snellville Post Office and the Snellville Tag Office on Lenora Church Rd.

The new Snellville Tag Office on Lenora Church Road is beautiful! Great parking too, you won't have to struggle. They even have a drive-thru lane for you to handle your car tag and registration needs. Moms like me, whose kids like to play with the stanchions, appreciate this.
I like having my kid immobilized while I handle pretty much anything. LOL
Inside, the tag office is lovely too - but from the visitor's perspective, it doesn't seem much bigger than their old location on Oak Road was. At least the area where you wait in line...it's not incredibly bigger - it resembled the old location in a way. But I'm sure deeper inside it's much bigger and more efficient. Go check it out, if only for the drinking fountain.

Good Luck Alison!

Alison Nalley Starnes, the Economic and Community Development Manager for the City of Snellville, has accepted a new job position at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Her last day of work for the City was yesterday. Thanks for all your hard work, Alison!

I know the Chamber of Commerce has a wonderful new employee!

If your PTA officers all have a Porsche...

No criminal charges filed (yet?) but Snellville Police have joined in on an investigation of the Shiloh Elementary School PTA...some major funds missing - somewhere between $12,000 and $14,000 estimated... read the story here

I'm going to hope it was just human errors of disorganization and nothing intentional.
But wow, that is a LOT of money.

That lady looks way too happy to be there

She must be the lawyer, she's making money. LOL
The residents of a Snellville home (zip code was 30039) where there were arrests for dogfighting allegations have had their arraignment. The picture is from 11Alive (LINK)

Online Gossips

I made the mistake this morning of browsing some forums where people discuss politics in Snellville. Whew, I was emotionally tired after reading some of it. So much seems like just downright gossip. There are 2-3 people who are regular posters, and anyone who comes in and posts anything that disagrees with what is said gets blasted. So I wasn't surprised that they don't have very many people joining in the discussions in their forums. It was really ugly....I won't even tell you where it was, because I don't think they deserve website traffic.

With only about 19,000 residents, it seems like some portions of Snellville can seem like a bickering family. I can get that at home. LOL... It's very tiresome and it feels like a long time until elections.

Bottom line: Nobody is ever as good or as bad as they are said to be (especially in online forums)

median dividers on US78

I have such mixed feelings on the issue of the medians being put into US Highway 78.
As a mother of two soon-to-be new drivers, I like the additional safety that the medians will provide. But, as former resident of Stone Mountain, I saw what the addition of the median on Memorial Drive (US78) several years ago did to that area. Stores closed because the median hurt their businesses.

As the quality stores left, so did the residents. Crime took over the area.
'White flight' took place. I remember sitting behind two white ladies in church, who complained about their property values going down and having trouble selling their houses because of black people moving in. I don't remember anything else about church that day, I had to concentrate on not smacking those two biddies on the backs of their heads!

I think the so-called 'white flight' is really what caused the Stone Mountain area to go downhill, not so much the medians themselves, but it was sort of a domino-effect. People's negative attitudes and fear is what really hurt that community the most.

Now I guess I have the fear that the same thing will happen to Snellville. The median is being done in sections, starting at Park Place to Stone Drive, then will go from Stone Drive to Killian Hill, from Killian Hill to Highpoint Drive, and from Highpoint Drive to Scenic Hwy/Hwy 124.
The work is promised to only occur after 7 pm, so it will cause very little disruption to traffic.

From the Evermore CID website, where they update information on the median project, it does look well-planned out and that the medians will be attractive, with landscaping, etc.

You can check out their site here to see more about the medians and how it may effect us as the project continues. LINK
