I don't know if you remember the Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry - it's also sometimes called the Southeastern or South East Gwinnett Co-Op. Remember it closed (I think it was due to lack of funds?) and then they needed to find a new location. They finally did get a new location in the fall of 2007 I believe.
About a week ago, I heard that the Co-op was actually running out of food to give to needy families. They are really having a hard time. Snellville United Methodist Church has drums for food donations, if you would like to clean out the pantry and cupboards and spread the love a bit, you can just drop off your non-perishable food donations there. The drums are right by the church office. This would be a nice thing to do as a family.
Also, the Co-op is a registered non profit charity, so if you know a business that would be interested in giving to a local charity this year, be sure to let them know about the Co-op.
The Co-op helps the needy in OUR AREA.
I am also working to compile all the information I can on the Southeastern Co-op, so that anyone wanting to either donate or get help will be able to find it:

Volunteers Search Gwinnett County for Homeless
Some 70 volunteers scoured Gwinnett County this morning, to tabulate the number of homeless. The data they collect will be used to allocate Federal housing assistance.
Although the information obtained would help the homeless, they are often scared to share their information.
The volunteers were advised regarding what they could say and to keep their body language neutral. When homeless people see someone coming toward them who could be the authorities, they tend to run away. AJC full story here

Poll managers are paid $250 while assistant managers earn $165 and clerks get $110 including required training. All poll workers must report to the polls by 6:00am on election day and work the whole day. Poll managers and an assistant must deliver the votes to Lawrenceville in person that evening. Meals are not provided.
Poll managers and assistant managers must attend a four-hour training session while other poll officials need one hour of training. Poll workers must vote by absentee ballot and are allowed to work at any polling location in the county.
Dirty Talk
Gwinnett County Public Utilities (ie Water) is encouraging residents to pick up their animal's wastes.
"Pet waste left on sidewalks, streets, yards or other open areas can be washed away and carried by rainwater into storm drains and drainage ditches which flow to nearby rivers, lakes, and streams. When pet waste enters our waterways, it decays using up oxygen dissolved in the water, contributes nutrients that cause excessive algae growth, and introduces bacteria that can cause disease. Remember, we use these waterways for fishing, swimming, recreation, and as our drinking water supply!"
Wow..yikes!
When I first had my dog, I found picking up after him to be totally gross, but as time went on, picking up his leavings was not hard to do at all. Just a few plastic grocery sacks tucked in your pocket work great. I would put my hand inside a bag and use it as the pickup tool - so you don't touch le poopee' at all.
So, please pick it up. By picking up your pet's waste, bagging it, and properly disposing of it in a garbage can [and not throwing it at the pet owner's house, no matter how much you want to], you will be doing your part to prevent stormwater pollution.
You can report illegal dumping to storm drains or waterways by calling the Stormwater Management Division at 678-376-7000 (24 hour line). Illegal dumping to storm drains is a violation of Gwinnett County's Illicit Discharge and Illegal Connection Ordinance.

Happy Anti-Procrastination Day!
I have been procrastinating about posting about Anti-Procrastination Day.
I woke up today thinking that today's the day to get to all the stuff I've been putting off.
I took care of two biggies - well, they seem big when you're putting them off, but now that I've done them, I don't know why I put them off so long. I think I put them off because they had to do with my kids, and what these projects deal with has me kind of scared (appointment for mole removal by a plastic surgeon for my daughter and Speech Therapy Application for my 4 year old son.) You wouldn't believe the amount of paperwork and proof of residency that is required for the Gwinnett County Speech Therapy application!
I'm going to pick a certain day of each month to be Anti-Procrastination Day. That way, I can tell myself it's okay to put it off, but I can only put it off for so long before I get to the next Anti-Procrastination Day, and will be forced to take action.
The new issue of Good Housekeeping Magazine has some good tips on how to stop putting things off: LINK

Gwinnett Community Clinic Awarded $3,000 Grant
This award was presented at the Christmas luncheon. "Gwinnett Community Clinic (GCC) was awarded a $3,000 grant from the Emory Eastside Medical Center Auxiliary. Auxiliary president Joanne Gilbreath presented Dr. Laurence Lesser, clinic co-founder, a check to be used for the clinic's operations. Lesser, a local cardiologist and clinic volunteer and supporter for over 15 years, shared some of the heartwarming stories of GCC patient successes and disease interventions. He stressed that individual and corporate financial gifts are how the clinic is able to continue to provide healthcare services to the uninsured, indigent residents of Gwinnett County. The GCC opened in the old Lawrenceville Health Department in 1988 and currently operates from the Emory Eastside Heritage Center on Fountain Drive in Snellville. Appointments are necessary. Patients may call for an appointment to determine qualification for clinic services by calling 770-985-1199. The auxiliary raises money through its Forget-Me-Knot Gift Shop revenues, jewelry shows and annual bake sales. To learn more about the Emory Eastside Auxiliary, visit www.emoryeastside.com." Feng Shui for Snellville City Hall?
In the Atlanta Journal & Constitution's Snellville.Talk blog, written by Susan Gast, Susan suggested that perhaps redecorating the City Hall building with soothing colors and feng shui would balance human relationships between Mayor Oberholtzer and the Snellville City Council and cut down on all the drama.
I let my smart-aleckness* get the better of me, so I don't know if my message will be approved, but here's what I commented:

Littering in Snellville
A MySnellvilleBlog reader is vexed by the littering in Snellville and has this to share with us:
Have you ever asked yourself why people litter? Personally, I blame it on their ignorance! Littering in the streets has got to be one of the laziest and stupidest things a driver or passenger can do…believe me I know. I littered once in college and was unfortunate (or fortunate) enough to get caught by a passing policeman. After paying the fine, I vowed to never throw trash out of my vehicle again.
So I asked myself as I was sitting at Wisteria & Highway 78 during lunch hour today…what possessed that man in front of me to throw his cigar wrapper out of his burgundy Buick sedan? After pondering, I came to the conclusion that the inside of his car must be immaculate and that there must not be any trash receptacles where his is traveling. So I placed my truck in park, walked around my car between the other parked cars, and picked the wrapper up for him. I of course, knocked on his window and politely told him that I would throw this away for him, and that he didn’t need to worry about it.
I would love to see the streets of this community, and everywhere for that matter, free of wrappers, beer cans, and fast food restaurant bags. How can we accomplish this?!? I would have loved to write the man in the burgundy Buick a citizen citation but I don’t think it would hold much merit, and besides, he would have probably just thrown it out the window anyway…any suggestions you or any of your readers have would be a great help. Thanks.
~Scott Henle
Scott, I hear ya. I just wrote about Baby Jane's Buffet on www.SnellvilleEats.com , and what I didn't mention about it was that I found the information about the restaurant from the flyer - which I found as litter in my backyard. Along with 2 styrofoam plates and a wrapper from a ground beef package (none of it was my own trash.) I also observe a LOT of litter on Rockdale Circle right near Skyland. It's horrible. I have taken my children, with gloves and trash bags in hand, and scoured our whole neighborhood for trash.
It's probably time to do that again. We received odd looks from our neighbors. LOL!
Here's a page from Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful about why it's important to prevent littering and steps we can take as citizens.
Scam Targeting Senior Citizens
This is straight from the City of Snellville's website:
Please Be Aware - New Scam Targeting Senior Citizens
There is a new scam targeting seniors. Unscrupulous people are befriending seniors and helping them with their business affairs and finances. After building confidence and a rapport with the senior, the scammer will bring a “stack” of documents over for the senior to sign. Many seniors will not take the time to read what they are signing because of their trust in this individual. Some of these papers may require notarization and a notary may be present. Hidden in the stack will be legal power of attorney that if signed, will authorize the scammer to withdraw funds from the seniors’ bank accounts.
If you are a senior, please be alert for this type of activity. If you have a parent, some other relative or friend who is apparently being befriended, please check into the person. Do not allow them to help the senior with their finances. Report this type of activity immediately to the Police Department at 770-98-3555.

Snowing in Snellville - School Closings
We heard a kid yelling outside, and when we looked, we discovered it was snowing! Big, fat flakes of snowy goodness. I say any kind of precipitation is a good thing, so bring it on! I don't think the kids will be going to school tomorrow, (but don't depend on this as your school closing report)...only time will tell, and it has always seemed to me that the Gwinnett County School System doesn't close the schools unless they deem it very dangerous.
Here is the Gwinnett County Schools' page with information about how they make the decision to close the schools: LINK
I will put the pages that show reported school closings here:

Snellville City Council and Mayor at Odds Again
Mayor Oberholtzer asked Interim City Manager, Jim Brooks to hold off on doing employee reviews until Brooks' contract expires February 13th, his reason being employee morale. Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer would like Mr. Brooks' successor to conduct the reviews and pay raises.
People without any management experience would wonder, "why wait on the reviews?" The reason is that when a predecessor has done reviews and pay raises, employees will generally be more loyal to the reviewer. By allowing the new City Manager of Snellville (when hired) to conduct the reviews, it will help the employees bond with the new supervisor. It just generally makes sense from a people perspective...but it probably generally angers the employees when they hear that their reviews (ie pay raises) have been stalled. This is only good for employee morale if the employees involved do not know about it. If they know about it, it will backfire and hurt morale. Oops. Who talked?
According to this news story, Mayor Oberholtzer felt attacked by members of the City Council, so he walked out on the meeting. I don't really blame him. The frustration must be really...well, frustrating! Better to walk out than to cuss out people. LOL!
But Hubs has a different perspective - he says that what should and needs to happen should just happen on schedule (the reviews and pay raises) and that the problem with management types (like me?! LOL) is that we try to arrange things to fit our business agendas, and we should just keep things simple. Hmmm. Good point there.
Technologically Challenged
I have minutes. No, it's not a new disease you should know about. I have cell phone minutes out the wazoo. I have a Net10 cell phone, the kind that you pre-pay 10-cents a minute. I hardly talk on the phone, it's more of an emergency phone for the car, and I will not talk on the cell phone when I'm driving, so the minutes just don't get used.
Every 3 months or so, I have to add more airtime to the phone to keep it current. I always buy the least amount I need to in order to keep the phone working.
Yet, here I am with nearly 2,000 minutes on the thing. My mom lives 250 miles away, so I've been trying to use up the time by calling her. I figure that it's long distance I've already paid for, so why not? She might even be getting sick of hearing from me, I am calling so much to get rid of those minutes because I have a new cell phone from TracFone, and I won't be renewing the Net10 model.
Same kind of deal, you pre-pay the minutes. It was time for a new phone. This one is a flip top phone, and frankly I don't fully understand how to use it yet. I called a friend yesterday with it, and then realized I had no idea how to hang up.
Sad.

One Way North Road from Wisteria to Oak
UPDATE September 2009: I actually like what they've done with this street now. I guess I had to get used to it!
It's been this way for a little while now - and if you exit the Snellville Post Office, you are forced to go left.
If you want to get on Wisteria, then you must exit left out of the post office, then turn right onto Oak Road, then sit and stew at the light of Oak Road and Scenic Highway, turn right onto Scenic, then turn right again onto Wisteria.
I used to be able to just turn right out of the Snellville Post Office, then turn right onto Wisteria.
What is the deal with this decision? It seemed sudden. What is this helping? All I can imagine is that it saves the waiting time for the people at the Wisteria/North Road light.
The first day I realized I had to go left, my first thoughts were of the business A Better Sign, which relocated to the North Road location from their old location at 78 and Scenic Highway.
I would guess that a lot of their business customers would go to their P.O. Box at the post office, then exit right out of the post office, and then pull into A Better Sign's parking lot. But the way it is now, potential customers are turned away from A Better Sign - and they better be pretty darned determined to go to A Better Sign and do the circuit all the way around to visit!
I spoke to Jeremy of A Better Sign, and asked him how it has impacted the business. He said it's the slow time of year for their business right now, so they aren't really sure. He said it's "not that bad, nothing devastating - yet," and mentioned that running the circuit to come back around is a hassle sometimes.
Fortunately, the business isn't based on location only. A Better Sign has always treated me well, they make great signs, so I hope it won't hit them very hard.
Why was the decision made? I know the traffic can REALLY pile up on North Road turning left onto Wisteria, but I didn't know there was a need for such a drastic change. I guess what really shocked me was the lack of forewarning also. Don't they usually post signs saying of proposed changes in traffic flow at the location of the change? I don't remember seeing anything, but maybe I just missed it.
I will deal with this change after proper professional counseling, but Hubs is still pretty upset.

This AJC article about the outpouring of community care for injured South Gwinnett athlete Arquevious Crane will warm your heart, but the 2nd portion of the article is proof that a good deed never goes unpunished.
A Trust is being sought for the funds that were donated, because donations were given specifically for his medical needs, but the family would like to be able to access the money for other needs, even after they have been given a $225,000 house, utilities paid for a year (house and utilities by E.R. Snell Contractors), and another company had the house made wheelchair friendly with renovations.
Snellville Dork of the Day (SDOTD)
Feel free to nominate your own Snellville Dork of the Day by leaving a blog Comment, but please - no names! Chances are that somebody, somewhere, knows them. In fact, the chance is probably 100% that somebody knows them.
I can't really decide between these two - so I guess it's a tie.
First nominee: the person in the white Mercedes who thought that I drove too slow, although I was driving about 5 miles over the limit (I confess), he/she had to pass me and cross over a double stripe to do it. Then, he/she zipped around, passing some more cars illegally, and on dangerous curves in the road.
The other nominee is my neighbor(s), who are too lazy to get out and walk their dogs in the morning, so they just let their dog(s) out the front door to roam the neighborhood to defecate in any yard but their own.

New Snellville Restaurant Site
This is our 2 year old son, posing next to the highchair he used at Atlanta Bread Company. It looks like our toddler posing next to our invisible baby, doesn't it?Hubs and I enjoyed (most) of the kids being back in school today by going to Home Depot in a doomed search for giant S-hooks (don't ask - ok, you can ask if you really care), followed by lunch at the Atlanta Bread Company on Scenic Highway.
I blogged our restaurant visit on SnellvilleEats. Check it out, the pictures alone might cause you to go there to eat tomorrow! Click here for the Atlanta Bread Company Snellville location Snellville Eats review.
I will try to get better on these reviews. Maybe they aren't really great reviews, because I think restaurant reviewers are more snotty. I will have to work on my negativity. But let me know what you think of it.
After Christmas Bargains in Snellville
I found some great deals in Snellville stores today.
I love to buy some Christmas things at deep discounts after the holidays.
Hobby Lobby on Wisteria Drive in Snellville (in same shopping center as K-Mart) has all Christmas stuff on clearance at 80% off. As of this afternoon, they still had a lot of ornaments, Santa figurines (even some cool retro stuff), lots of beautiful gift bags, and gorgeous brocade Christmas tree skirts.
As an example of a great 80% off deal, the tree skirts retail at around $90 and $100. At 80% off, some of them are then $18 and $20. I don't even think a person could buy the fabrics and tassels for that.
CVS at the corner of Rockdale Circle and US 78 in Snellville (right by the Waffle House and Quik Trip) has their Christmas items at 50% and 75% off. There is still plenty of nice gift wrap left.
They also have jellies/preserves, Snowman ceramic Nonni Biscotti cookie jars (with cookies in 'em still...yes I resisted!) They also have candles that are technically 'holiday' but they are cream and green so they could be used anytime.
If you are in search of good deals online, Walmart is having their after Christmas clearance, and here is a link right to it: Clearance Savings at Walmart
Happy hunting!

Honoring Snellville Residents Who Passed Away in 2007
Notable Snellville residents who passed away in the year 2007 were honored in an Atlanta Journal & Constitution article.
Mentioned:
Kathryn Bird, 90, Snellville: lived in Snellville longer than anyone, admitted she'd rather be cutting the grass than keeping house; Nov. 5, 2007.
Ms. Bird was to be honored as the Grand Marshall of the Snellville Days Parade in 2008, because she was the longest living Snellville native.
Zdzislaw Stanislaw Foltyn, 80, Snellville: fought in the Polish resistance, fled to America, founded Polish-American Heritage Society and worked on housing Polish athletes during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta; Oct. 16, 2007.
The AJC left out some other Snellville citizens who we haven't forgotten and I believe to be notable too:
Albert Chai, theowner of Mah Jong Restaurant in Snellville. Mr. Chai died of lung cancer in December, 2007.
Domingo Espinal, the owner of B & B Autos in Snellville who was tragically shot at his business during a robbery.
Obituary of Domingo Espinal:
Mr. Espinal was a resident of GA for the last 20 years and was owner/operator of A & B Auto Sales, Inc in Snellville for the last year and half. He was an airplane pilot, instructor and mechanic and also a helicopter pilot.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 24, at 11am at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel. Interment will be held at Lilburn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 10am until 9pm, and Saturday from 9am until service time, at the funeral home. Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, LLC, Snellville Chapel, 770/979-3200 www.wagesfuneralhome.com
Snellville Items Available on CafePress

I found this sweatshirt today on CafePress, and I was surprised that there is a fair selection of Snellville related items for sale on that site. If you don't like what you see, you can create items yourself!
You will see some items with my artwork of a Snellville tree on it - I put those on CafePress a long time ago and sort of forgot about them. But at the time I listed my item(s), there weren't any other Snellville products at all. It shows that Snellville is growing, and I think it's nice that people are creating items to show Snellville pride.
I get a percentage of the sale if you make a purchase using any of these links.
Oh thank you thank you!
Snellville resident featured on CNN
A Snellville resident is featured on CNN on organizing and stress.
SNELLVILLE, Georgia (CNN) -- From the outside, Kimberley Mims' Snellville home is immaculate. But look behind the garage door and it's a different story. CNN Link
----
My garage is a nightmare, but I don't have the good sense like Kimberley to hire an organizer to help me! If anyone wants to go into our garage, I have to hand out hard hats and mountain climbing gear.
