Found on the College of William and Mary's website:
"Freshman Emily Burns (Snellville, Ga.) touched the wall in the 50 free in a personal-record 23.41 seconds Thursday morning to highlight the preliminary session for William and Mary which saw the Tribe advance 10 swimmers to the evening session. Towson took over the team lead with 166 points after advancing 12 swimmers, seven in the championship and five in the consolation. William and Mary moved up from a tie for sixth to third with 119 points.
Burns’ performance, which made her the second-fastest swimmer in school history, advanced her to the championship finals as the fourth seed."

Sheriff's Deputy and 2 Young Daughters Murdered in L'ville Home
This is so sad and senseless.
A 39 year old Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy and her 2 daughters were killed last night around 8 pm at their home on Madison Chase Drive in Lawrenceville (near Simonton Rd). Her daughters were 4 and 11 years old.
The Deputy was a 7-1/2 year veteran of the Sheriff's Department and was assigned to the sex offenders unit.
Her 17 year old son, who also lived at the house, is the suspected killer and is in Gwinnett County Police custody.

Little Gardens Restaurant to Close
Considered kind of a landmark, Little Gardens restaurant will close and the building will become a facility for weddings, special events, and a catering service. I'm really disappointed, because I always meant to eat there but for some reason never did.
The closing of the restaurant has brought some customers to tears. Understandably, since so many marriage proposals and weddings have happened there and anniversary dinners enjoyed.

Customer service or disservice?
Snellville Hallmark store customer service nightmare...I don't make this stuff up, folks....and it's not my review so I'm not saying it's true or not. I'm a customer service freak myself, so I can't stand to hear about someone even feeling like they were mistreated or embarrassed publicly.

Canadian air blows into Snellville GA; Effects on Georgia dialect may be heard

Keep your ears open for phrases like "take off, eh?"
and "get lost, ya hoser" as this Canadian air blows into Snellville tonight.
Can't afford that Alaskan cruise? I can't either....I plan to breathe deeply and maybe it will be almost as good.
"...COLD...WINDY WEATHER EXPECTED THROUGH WEDNESDAY...
A STRONG COLD FRONT WAS MOVING THROUGH GEORGIA THIS EVENING. THIS
FRONT AND A STRONG UPPER-LEVEL DISTURBANCE...BROUGHT THE

Proposed Snellville Stormwater Utility Ordinance
will get more time to be considered by the citizens of Snellville.
We're going to get some more time to get more information and think over the Stormwater Utility Ordinance.

Brett Harrell likens the Stormwater "fees" to taxes in his blog.
A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for March 10th.
After reading the info you may feel moved to attend and/or speak on behalf or against the proposal. Can you tell I am not informed very well myself? (yet)

If you regularly send out flowers and gifts and are looking for something different, you might want to check out Edible Arrangements, a new business in Snellville.
Edible Arrangements makes arrangements of fruit that have the appearance of a flower bouquet or centerpiece. Read more about this
What would you do with 270 million dollars?
If you won 270 million dollars like the man in Portal GA, what would you do with it?
Next to this AJC article about the winning, there is a poll asking people what they think the winner should do with the money. Although I wasn't thrilled with the options given, I was surprised that most people think he should put it in the bank or invest it in stocks and bonds.
I clicked on "buy real estate." I think if I had 270 mil, I could afford to put quite a bit of it into real estate, and it's a down market so prices are good. It has nowhere to go but up, it's just a matter of hanging in there. With that kind of money, I could afford to hang in and wait.
But the survey aside, my first step would have been to claim the money anonymously. I'd check out several financial planners and accountants. I'd hire a couple more planners to analyze what the main one says. Then I'd need a private investigator to make sure nobody was embezzling.
Never mind. I don't think I want to win. Look at the paranoia creeping in. It already sounds too stressful.
The upside would be giving to charities, so I guess it could be worth the hassle to be able to do that.
ScrapbookThis.com Closing, Offers 50% Discount on Everything

Kids Clothing and Toy Consignment Sales in Snellville Area
The Kidsignment sale is over, and I'm glad to not have to be one of the people cleaning up that huge place!
If you missed Kidsignments or you didn't get everything you need, be aware that the Gwinnett Mothers of Multiples Club (formerly Gwinnett Mother's of Twins Club) has their spring consignment sale coming up March 8th.
Westminster Presbyterian Church Preschool in Snellville will be having their kids consignment sale in April (I'll post more details as I get them)
Snellville United Methodist Church will have their children's clothing and toys sale on Thursday, March 6th from 10 am to 1 pm, Friday March 7th from 10 am to 1 pm, and Saturday, March 8th, from 8 a to 1 pm. Most items will be 1/2 price on Saturday. The sale will be held in the Christian Life Center of the church.
If you hear of more, please email me or post it as a comment. Thanks!
Kidsignments: Today is the FINAL Day of the Spring Sale - Save 50%
Today is the last day of the Kidsignments Sale at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds.
If you go, everything is half off today... if the item's tag doesn't have NR on it. The NR means that the item is Not Reduced. On the last day of the sale, there is usually a decent amount of many things left.
Rarer things, like the elusive wide shoes I need for my 4 year old son, are long gone. But I would still say it's worth a trip out there.
I didn't go this time, although I wanted to go yesterday, I simply have way too many art commissions that I am working on and starting to run late... (I really shouldn't even be blogging, but I just love this blog too much not to get a word in on most days.) So yesterday I worked and paid bills during my only so-called "free" time.
Anyway, why not run out there and see what deals you can catch?

Police Blotter
Police Blotter Roundup from around the area...here's just a few
Stone Mountain: a guy was walking down Rockbridge Road carrying a machete. When police approached him, he hid it behind his back and then started a screaming fit about training for Al-Qaida. Dude, you should have just said you were helping the community by cutting weeds alongside the roadway. Didn't Al-Qaida teach you anything?!? Sheesh.
Centerville/Snellville Circle K store: A lady went in the convenience store to pay and during that time, her car was stolen.
Loganville: at the bar called Atmosphere (it's @mosphere on the sign out front) a lady reported to police that her coat was stolen. Her coat was recovered from inside a toilet tank in the bathroom (probably pretty soggy) and her keys were gone. If the lady is reading this, it's probably a good idea to change the locks at your house in case whoever has the keys knows where you live!

New Crime Fighting Tool Paid for by Drug Dealers
The Snellville Police Department has a new crime fighting tool that saves them gas and time!
It's a new computer program that allows an Officer to video-conference with a Judge at the Gwinnett County Courthouse without driving all the way to Lawrenceville and waiting.
The Officer can be sworn in by video-conference and Warrants approved. The paperwork can then print out in the police car. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
The coolest thing about it is that it isn't costing the citizens of Snellville anything. It was paid for using money that came from arrests of drug dealers.
Way cool.

Brett Explains It All & I Have To Vent
Former Mayor of Snellville Brett Harrell (pictured) clarifies some details about Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer serving as Interim City Manager in his blog.
It has me thinkin,' hey, if Jerry's not getting additional income to serve as Interim City Manager, he's saving the City of Snellville some money, isn't he? City Manager salary is something like $100K if I remember right.
I think what needs to happen at City Hall is what needs to happen in most businesses and families...better communication. I think many people, including those on the City Council, see Mayor Oberholtzer as having a "full speed ahead" attitude, and they feel like they are being run over by him.
But this is what happens when someone is accustomed to getting things done. It certainly is frustrating to be a person who wants to get things accomplished and has a vision...but sometimes a person like that has to work to slow down and make sure everyone understands what is going to be done and why a decision was made. This is basic People-ology.
Still, I am disturbed by the over $30K given to a Municipal Manager's Association (it was tucked in with something else that was passed) and our City Council members didn't know it was approved(?!?) Some Council members just thought it was discussed and not approved. Can we get Starbucks to donate some coffee or something for these people? Lord, you know I love you all on the City Council, but you need to wake up!

Run the Reagan Snellville Award Winners
Congratulations to these Snellville residents for placing in the Run The Reagan Half-Marathon.
My apologies if I am missing anyone, and I'm sorry I didn't post in the blog about the Reagan run before the event. I was probably passed out drunk again or something. Oh wait, I guess I would need to drink for that to happen. So that wasn't it. I dunno, I just missed writing about it. I've lived in Snellville nearly 14 years and have never attended the Run the Reagan event. It looks really fun. I'll try for next year.
Matt Lottes finished 1st place, 7th overall with a time of 1:20:48 for the age group 1-19.
Jack Wilson finished 1st place, 13th overall with a time of 1:22:27 in the 35-39 age group.
Vincent Brennan finished 2nd place, 8th overall with time of 1:20:50 in the 40-44 age group.
Randall Plummer finished 3rd place, 126th overall in the 55-59 age group.
John Hancock finished with a time of 1:50:30 in 3rd place/186 overall in the 60-64 age bracket.
In the female category, Jamie White of Snellville finished 1st/57 overall in the 20-24 age group, with a time of 1:34:31.

Storms in Snellville
We had a slightly-scary afternoon here, with thunderstorms cutting through the Atlanta area. There was some risk of tornadoes, but no tornadoes were actually documented.
We were fortunate that the storm happened on a non-work day. Anytime there are storms and less people are out driving, the better it is.
I have a weather radio...I never figured the dang thing out very well, but I think I should dust it off and see if I can re-set it. I also have a wind up emergency radio with a flashlight built in. It has the worst radio reception ever, but it's a good emergency radio to keep in the bathroom (we don't have a basement so the bathroom is the most central location in the house and our tornado hideaway.)
I really need a house with a basement. I don't wanna die in a bathroom. It's just not how I'm gonna go. It has to be much more interesting than that.

Speak out on Oberholtzer's self appointment as City Manager
What do you think about Mayor Oberholtzer appointing himself City Manager? Opinions are all over the place on this. Depends on who you ask...
Some people say he was totally right to do it because it was an emergency situation - the Mayor himself says that previous Snellville mayors Clower and Harrell did it - yet others say it's Oberholtzer's fault that it became an "emergency" situation in the first place - and I've even seen other comments that this was Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer's "plan" all along.
Some folks are likening it to dictatorship. Mayor Oberholtzer says that the City of Snellville has great department heads and that the city practically runs itself.
Attorney and City Council member Warren Auld is looking into the legality of it all, looking for a precedence and he said he hadn't found any as of the date of the AJC news article.
Check out this AJC article, but remember to come back here and tell me what you think!
As my mom would say, at least this gives us something to talk about.

Link to the Kidsignments Sale information
A lot of people seem to be looking for information on the Kidsignments consignment sale, a huge sale of baby and children's used items at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Many people have thought it was this weekend, but it doesn't start until Tuesday the 19th of February. Here is a link to information on Kidsignments, newly updated.
Do You Smell Barbeque?
This guy should have thought a bit before trying to steal copper from this electrical plant.
LINK...This happened in London, but Snellville and Gwinnett County have experienced copper thefts also.
"At the very least putting the hacksaw through the cable would have created an almighty bang and the line would have burned for quite a few seconds, showering them with molten copper... We can only assume they left in a great hurry or they were injured and were dragged away by an accomplice." But searches of local hospitals have so far not found the culprit, a spokeswoman for Derbyshire Police said Tuesday."
If only all justice would be so swift.
(Lord, I apologize!)
Snellville in a "Peon Crisis"
Want to see how Snellville looks from the outside? Snellville looks like a joke. Check out this post from LocalPolitics101 political blogger Al Arnold, who lives in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. You know he's probably seen a lot, but Snellville - well, Snellville apparently takes the cake.

Spanish Class for Adults
An 8 week long Spanish class will be taught at Snellville United Methodist Church starting the week of February 17, 2008. Classes will be held one or two nights a week, and will be from 7 pm until 8:30 pm. Childcare will be provided free during class time (but you must pre-register)
The cost of the class? Only $10. So if you have been wanting to learn some Espanol, or brush up your skills, this is your chance!
I am seriously thinking about it, but I think the time will be a little late at night to have my kids out. I already struggle to get them bathed and ready for bed as it is. Can't beat 10 bucks and childcare included though, right? I took one Spanish class in 9th grade and I learned some colors and numbers, so I am only able to speak like an 18 month old Spanish speaking child. This class at the church should be more conversational and useful.

Southeast Gwinnett Coop Food List
I finally received the list of items needed by the Southeast Gwinnett Coop (food bank).
I decided to make yet another Squidoo page - this time on the Southeastern Gwinnett Co-op, to get the word out about what is needed.
Any income that is made from that page will go automatically to charity.
Please help by sharing the page (there are links on the right side of the page to easily share/email the page with friends and family)
The entire list of the food that they need is listed on that page and I will update it as I receive new information. Snellville United Methodist Church will have collection bins in the church until Sunday March 16th (there are several of the bins, but the one easiest to find is near the church office.)
The church office is on the side of the church nearest Krystal's. Look for the carport-looking thing - you can pull up right there and bring the donations into the building.

Are you an expert on anything?
Sure you are. Everybody knows something about something, and if you aren't an expert yet, maybe after reading a lot on a subject you're interested in, you will become somewhat of an expert.
Then, take your expertise and create a Squidoo page. They're free, and I have made some money from the pages I have created. You make money by adding modules to your blog, like Ebay or Amazon links. It's really easy to add them - just add items to your page that relate with the subject of the page. Squidoo automatically adds Google Adsense ad blocks that relate to the content of your page, and rather than pocketing all that money like many sites would, Squidoo splits the income from those ads with you. When you create each page, Squidoo will ask you if you intend to make money or if you would like to donate the earnings of the page to charity.
Amazingly, a page that has been the most profitable for me is a page that just lists links to grocery store's sales flyers. <---You can see it here, and notice how I have put in links to stuff on Ebay that relates to grocery shopping. I also added in links from a free affiliate network called Commission Junction.
Keep in mind, you can also create Squidoo pages to promote your company, how to do something (this is mine on how to draw animal fur or human hair); a charitable cause, or your favorite musician. Another idea is something that is unique to you - do you have special needs in clothing styles or sizes? I have big honkin' feet and I got tired of searching for shoes in my size, so I created a page for women with large shoe sizes.
Think of your pages as a way to help someone else, and especially if you are passionate about a subject, that will make your page great. For example, I receive a lot of email from aspiring artists, asking how they can start drawing portraits as a business. So I made a series of 7 pages that deal with different facets of starting a pencil portrait drawing business .
I think you get the idea by now. I just think it's great.

Where to go to vote in Snellville
I knew where to go this morning to vote in the Primary.
But what if you have no idea where you should go in Snellville to vote?
I think the best place to find the information is Gwinnett County's official website at www.GwinnettCounty.com
Unfortunately, at the time I am writing this, I cannot get the website to load (probably is getting a lot of hits today) so I cannot find the exact link for the voter information. If you have trouble, try again in a little while, and if I have access to better information I will update this.

Sad news to report today. In Loganville, police have charged a college student with two counts of murder in the beating deaths of his parents. Joshua Spearman, 18, was held without bail after Darryl Spearman, 55, and Cherri Spearman, 52, were found dead in their home Friday.
The father, Darryl Spearman was an Assistant Principal at Stone Mountain Middle School.

Got Tires?
If you are the handy sort, the type of person who would love to have a tire for a tire swing, or you want to have a planter made out of a used tire for your yard, then please drive down Rockdale Circle. There are three tires that have been dumped by the fire hydrant.
Coming from US78, turn by the Quik Trip onto Rockdale Circle, then take the first right to stay on Rockdale. The tires will be on your right. They have been there for at least 3 weeks.
It bothers me that someone would just dump them by the fire hydrant of all places. Wouldn't it be wonderful (sarcasm) if there was a fire and a need for firefighters to get to that hydrant, and there was a bunch of junk around it that the firefighters would have to stumble over to get to the hydrant?!?
Anyway, just think of the many uses you could get out of these tires. I just thought of another one. They'd be great for physical fitness - use them like the football players do - for fast footwork. This handy workout tool is just waiting for the first person to come and get it.
Kudos to Snellville Police
This morning, I was driving around Snellville for at least 30 minutes. This afternoon, I was driving around in the Snellville area for 15 minutes. I saw at least 7 police cars driving this morning and 1 this afternoon. Eight police car sightings in a 45 minute period. It has to be a record. If I was a criminal, I'd go to a different city. I don't know why the visibility, but it's great. Good work!
Whines about Signs
This is the kind of thing that I wouldn't write about if this was a newspaper. It wouldn't be worth the ink and paper. But, since this is a blog, I can write about the most trivial stuff.
There's a sign on Main Street in Snellville where Mattress King, Genesis Salon, and Subway are in the same shopping center in Snellville.
I was sitting waiting for the traffic light, and reading the sign. The top two lines say: "GET YOUR GUEST BEDS HERE" - then the last line says something like: "AF 3 PM 6" VALUE DEAL $4.99"
I was trying to rationalize what they were trying to say. I thought maybe Mattress King had 6" thick guest beds, but I couldn't fathom why you could only buy a 6" guest bed after 3 pm, and the $4.99 really puzzled me. I thought maybe it's guest beds for $499. I'm embarrassed to say that it took me a while to figure it out that the last line was for Subway, not for the Mattress King. Okay, it was early.
I don't really think they should share the sign. Or, just don't share it at the same time. Subway should use it one week and Mattress King the next. That's the only way that each of them will have room to put up messages that will communicate well and bring customers in. People only have a few minutes to scan the sign and process the information. The word 'After' should not need to be abbreviated to AF. Don't do anything with your business that makes customers go "huh?!?"
Just alternate weeks to share the sign. That's all I'm sayin.'

The Kidsignments sale begins February 19th, so if you have kids or especially if you know someone who is expecting a baby, be sure to tell them about the sale. You will be doing them a great favor.

If you are interested in selling or buying at the Kidsignments sale this year, I have collected information about the sale on a Squidoo page here. I have both bought and sold at the sale which is held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds twice each year.
