Snellville Woman STILL Hasn't Won Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes

Local resident and blogger of MySnellvilleBlog.com is "disappointed" and "dismayed" that she has still not won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes, despite repeated entries.

"I've clicked on every link they've sent me in emails to get 'extra' entries and chances at winning," said the woman, to no avail.

"I figure somebody will win, and maybe it will be me. I even memorized the 'Winner's Script,' so if PCH representatives come to my house in Snellville with roses and a humorously oversized check, I'll be able to win some extra money for reciting it."

The script requires the winner to say something like "I've just won Publisher's Clearing House! Now I KNOW it's for real!"

The fact that she has answered 2,395 of these Publisher's Clearing House emails and nothing has happened has failed to deter the high hopes of the Snellville woman. She has big plans for the winnings.

"If I win, I'm gonna get me a double-wide trailer."

Gwinnett County Targets Aggressive Drivers

Leave some space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Good advice for any day. This safety initiative is geared especially toward promoting safety practices between passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers.

"About 35 officers will patrol the roughly 30-mile corridor of I-85 between Sugarloaf Parkway into Jackson County and up to I-985 to Georgia 20. Four signs have been posted along the stretch to illustrate the safe distance and warn drivers to avoid a ticket."

Bob Barr's Online Petition to Save Bill of Rights

"I recently testified at a congressional hearing about the separation of powers between the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government. Incredibly, there was a discussion about the erosion of your rights as guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. What is incredible is that we were having the dialogue in the first place.

But, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Over the past 50 years, and certainly since 2001, there has been a steady curtailment of the rights our founding fathers fought and died for. And all this has been happening as Congress has allowed the White House to issue uncontested executive orders and bill signing statements of all kinds slowly chipping away the bedrock that was our Bill of Rights.

I've created a short video that I hope you'll watch. Then, I hope you'll take a moment to sign a special online petition we've created. We should collect thousands of these petitions to save the Bill of Rights and deliver them to Congress - specifically the Judiciary Committee which held the hearing I mentioned a moment ago.

While the President shouldn't be so fast to suspend our rights - even during a time of war - I hold the Congress equally accountable. They've shunned their sworn duty to uphold and protect the Constitution...after all that's where the Bill of Rights is found!

When I first considered running for President, it was with the belief that I could change the way Washington does business. I had hoped that I could pressure other candidates and the Congress to respect their oath of office. This petition will help.

Please watch my short video, sign the petition and then forward this information to your family and friends.

Thank you."

Sincerely,

Bob Barr signature

Snellville Teen Dies After Football Practice

I am very sorry to share news that a 13 year old young man from Shiloh High School participating in the Gwinnett Youth Football League died after two hours of conditioning for football season. Our deepest condolences to his family.

Jahceem Xavier, 13, was pronounced dead at 9:45 p.m. at
Eastside Medical Center, said Ted Bailey, chief investigator
for the Gwinnett Medical Examiner's office.
The cause of death appears to have been a heart attack,
Bailey said, although it will be 12 weeks until they get
all the test results back to say for certain.

Mercury Expert Coming to Assess Crematory Concerns

Battle over crematory heats up
Atlanta Journal Constitution - GA, USA
By BETH WARREN Some Snellville City Council members are waging a battle to try and stop the opening of a crematory near homes, a fight the mayor said is all ...

---------------------

The AJC is always so witty with their article titles...get it? Battle over Crematory HEATS up?!? [insert Goofy's laugh here]

Kelly Kautz is bringing a Mercury expert in from Missouri (I wonder who is paying for that?)...can we just have a Microsoft NetMeeting or an email?...and a couple of boys spoke up in a meeting that they are worried about Mercury emissions going into the air from the dental fillings in the corpses that will be incinerated.

I don't mean to be morbid, but this is an easy fix...remove the teeth before the body is cremated. Read up on Mercury dangers...

I don't want to live right next to a crematory, so my heart goes out to the folks who have this coming into their neighborhood...but, the law is the law. If you think you have a case or a way to stop the crematorium from coming in legally, then all power to you.

Mayor Oberholtzer says that it's all just political posturing by some of the Council members, and that the carbon monoxide from all the cars on US78 at that location is probably more harmful than what the crematory will emit. I think he is right. So the median in the highway is going to save people, and then the increased emissions from cars waiting to turn and u-turn at the median openings is going to kill some. Hmm...I wonder how that will average out. 'Cause you see, Mayor Oberholtzer was and is completely behind the median installation.

Sorry, I got a little off track there...

Okay. Check out the environmental impact. Let's get the mercury expert from Missouri in here and buy him lunch and whatnot. Let's count the parking spaces with Warren Auld, let's double check the code. Let's get a code expert to double check the first code check. Let's count the chairs. I'm completely in agreement with checking it out to make sure everything is legal and up to snuff. But once it is, let's let Nazum run his business if it's all been done legally.

MySnellvilleBlog.com Changes

I don't know if you've noticed, but I've been doing a bit of 'housecleaning' on this blog lately. I changed the blog to have three columns instead of two, so I could put more useful items on the sidebar navigation areas (the columns on the sides).

Inspired by Hubs being stuck in traffic on I-85 for over an hour, I worked more on the Driving sections. If you look on the left and scroll down, you will see links to the Georgia Navigator website's feed, which will automatically update and link to information about accidents on Gwinnett County roads. You'll also find links to help you find the best gas prices. It's selfish, really. If you don't get stuck in traffic, you'll have more time to spend reading this blog (heh heh)

I also added some news feeds to things I hope you like. Headline and Entertainment updates from Yahoo.com and Reuters. These automatically update when big news happens.

I hope you find the information helpful, that's what I created this blog to do. So, if you have a site that you especially love to visit each day, please tell me about it and if I think it interests enough people, I will add it to this blog.

Thanks for reading and keep commenting!

Bob Barr Making Gun Rights a Platform Point

I signed up for the email lists of the candidates, and every one of them assumes I am on their "team" or support them 100 percent. I just signed up on their email lists to see what they had to say and how they would communicate. The comments in red are mine. Keep in mind that my comments are really mostly tongue-in-cheek. I am probably very weird in my position about guns. I don't want one in my house...[PMS...say no more]...but I think everyone of legal age should have the right to have guns.

Here's one I received from Bob Barr's Campaign:

Dear fellow gun owner, [I don't know why they assumed this?!? Yeah baby I'm packin' heat]

On Monday, July 20th you may have seen news coverage of statements I made on the issue of new gun control laws in Washington, D.C. Just a few weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Washington's gun ban unconstitutional, the city government there is passing new ordinances that might as well be a renewal of the ban as it requires that guns kept there be locked up and/or disassembled. [Wow...great. Somebody tries to break in, I should be ready to defend my family in oh, an hour and forty five minutes!] Their new law adds further restrictions and registrations that were clearly not the intent of the Court.

Have you noticed the total silence about this issue in the Presidential campaign?

By his actions - not his words - we know that Barack Obama is a long time proponent of every imaginable gun control scheme. He is a perfect fit for the gun grabbers in his party.

And where is John McCain on this issue? Silent. [McCain probably mostly agrees with your views, Bob, but McCain is working to appeal to the undecideds who might be anti-guns]

You see, once again, there is very little difference between their campaigns on issues of importance to our gun rights.

As one of my first acts as President I would order federal law enforcement to step in and force Washington, D.C. officials to abide by the court ruling. I am reminded this day of the time when federal authorities had to step in to enforce court rulings related to desegregation in the South.

Gun ownership and use is as much a civil right as any other, and I will continue the fight for our freedom to keep and use our firearms.

But unless I can get this message out in the debates and to everyone concerned about this issue, gun control will not even be discussed. Click here to help me get the message out.

Right now, today, we need to nail Senators McCain and Obama down on exactly what they will do in office. Every voter has a right to know.

I've made it crystal clear that I oppose:

  • Gun bans of every type
  • Gun registration (which can only lead to confiscation)
[My car has to be registered...it hasn't led to confiscation]
  • Waiting Periods - because when you need a gun, you need it now
[If my PMS is really bad, I should be able to get a gun to use right then on everyone who pisses me off when I'm irrational...wow, what a scary thought! See Devin Grell]
  • Ammunition registration and serial numbers - absolutely unworkable
[Yeah why bother, the criminals just grind them off anyway]
  • High taxes to keep folks from owning and using their guns
  • Ammunition capacity limitation
  • Restricting hunting on federal lands [if I don't own the land but the government does, doesn't society/government have the right to limit my use?]
Still, no word from the Obama and McCain campaigns other than the trite platitudes about "supporting the second amendment."

It has been said that this campaign for the White House is a revolution.

In many ways it is. We are fighting the powerful special interests who have as their sole aim maintaining power in Washington over you, your life, your money and especially your guns.

When I served in Congress representing the good people of Georgia, I was a strong advocate for gun rights, won "A+" ratings from national gun groups, and today I serve on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association.

We are revolting against the status quo.

Today, our revolution needs ammunition to fight back with. Thankfully, our country is still a peaceful nation of laws and the kind of ammo I'm talking about isn't fired from the guns I want to protect.

But believe me, the ammo I seek from you will make the same political impact and a very loud noise.

If you don't care that gun control is part of the public debate in this election, then just hit "delete." Barack Obama and John McCain hope you do just that.

I think, however, that you aren't one to turn and run from a fight. Like me, you have the courage to stand up for what you believe. You put principle above party. [Yes this is true, I don't care about party affiliation]

You put your gun rights first. [I do? Thanks for telling me]

When I buy ammo for any one or more of my guns, it is now common for me to spend $35 to $50 for a few hours at the range or a day in the field hunting. [Wow, can I borrow some cash for gas?]

May I ask you to provide my campaign "ammo" to help us get the message out?

Your gift of $25, $35, $50 or more, when added to our magazine of ammo from other pro-gun, pro-freedom friends, will give me the arsenal to wage an effective battle in this political war for liberty.

We will all have plenty of time for shooting and hunting after the November election. I urgently need your financial support TODAY. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Bob Barr

P.S. - The shenanigans being pulled in Washington, D.C. today must be stopped. I believe it will take federal intervention to enforce the law of the land there and it is clear that neither John McCain nor Barack Obama will lift a finger to protect the civil rights of gun owners. Your gift today is the ammo I need to advance the cause of gun owner rights and freedom in America today. Thank you.

Donny Edouard Killed While Putting Toddler Child to Bed

More information is coming out about the murder of Donny Edouard in Lawrenceville.
He asked his 18 year old friend to stay outside the house on Alcovy Drive and chat with Devin Grell while he put his toddler daughter to bed.

It seems that Devin Grell became impatient and called Donny Edouard by cell phone, then he went in the house and shot Donny Edouard point blank in the head, right in front of Edouard's child.

Apparently, Devin Grell has had impulse control and anger issues for a long time. When the murder of Donny Edouard happened, Grell had just gotten out of prison on parole for the 2003 abdominal stabbing a classmate at Dacula High School.

Blood Drive - Snellville City Hall August 1

Put this on your calendar...even if you've never given blood before, consider it. Now more than ever, your blood could save someone's life.

The American Red Cross will have a Blood Drive at Snellville City Hall on Friday, August 1, 2008 from 1:30 pm until 6:30 pm.

They have an urgent need for type O blood donors. It's okay if you don't know what blood type you are. They will check your blood. Bring a photo ID.

Donors can enter a drawing held by the Red Cross for a chance to win a $1,000 gas card.

I just gave blood on July 16th for the second time this year. You do need to make sure you feel well the day of your blood donation.

Is it painful? I don't find it painful at all. The finger prick that they do to test your blood prior to donation hurts me worse than when they insert the needle into my arm for the actual blood donation....but the worst of it is only like a quick pinch.

Chilling Murder of Genai Coleman

The lady who was shot near Gwinnett Place Mall has been identified as 40 year old Genai Coleman. I posted about this earlier today. More details have come to light. Her car was found in downtown Atlanta.

When I first heard about this murder, it was reported that it was a 20 year old woman who was murdered. At the time, I didn't think it was random. I thought maybe it was a domestic situation. I also often tend to think, (mistakenly) that people bring stuff like this on themselves due to their poor life choices...the people they choose to date, buying drugs, etc.

Now we know the real details -- it does seem to be a random killing.. the criminals wanted her car. It had absolutely nothing to do with life choices. It could have happened to any of us.

Genai Coleman was simply waiting for her daughter to get off work at a nearby Red Lobster restaurant. We've learned that Ms. Coleman was a preschool teacher, and although she was single, she still managed to raise and care for three foster daughters.

I struggle to come to terms with how someone who is minding her own business can be gunned down like that? For a car...she probably would have given the car to the perpetrators. Who can murder someone for a car...a car they are going to dump?

They're so screwed up in the head that they'd rather kill someone than take MARTA or a taxi?!? I am just really horrified by this. It makes me angry. It is senseless!

I guess it makes me think about how this could happen to anyone, at any time. It's very scary that there are people in this world who don't value life at all.

My heart goes out to Ms Coleman's family, I hope and pray for the police to make a swift arrest so the family will eventually be able to have some peace. I hope that whoever did it will confess and clear their heavy heart and regain their conscience.

What Does Doug Stack?

I didn't follow the Gwinnett County Commissioner's race very much, and I was embarrassed by my lack of knowledge. Or, I thought I was lacking in knowledge, until I was driving around Snellville on the day before the election, and Hubs said, "I keep seeing all these signs...is there an election or something coming up?" [my jaw dropped] Then I surprised myself by being able to name every candidate.

Then we joked about how someone could misunderstand Doug Stacks' sign to mean that Doug stacks something. [redneck twang] "All them signs say Doug stacks sumpthin,' but what the hail does he stack?!?"

Local Soldier Killed In Afghanistan Laid To Rest Sunday
WXIA-TV - Atlanta,GA,USA

Snellville, GA -- A local soldier killed in one of the bloodiest battles in Afghanistan in months was laid to rest Sunday, one week after his death. ...

Family and friends gathered for a private funeral at Zoar United Methodist Church in Snellville.

His service included full military honors at his gravesite at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens.

Good video at the above link, and here's more information on the Patriot Guard Riders.

Here are the photos in the Gallery at the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
The photo of Cpl. Ayers' parents being presented with the folded American flag was hard for me to view. I know that the hardest moments at a funeral are the 21 gun salute and the Presentation of the Flag. It is (or should) be a private moment, it seems to me. If you look through the window in the photo, you can see another camera pointed at the Ayers' family. It must have been very hard to take. If my son had died, it would be difficult for me to just get out of the house 1 week after...this is a remarkable family.

Gwinnett Animal Shelter Tests New Ideas

Gwinnett’s animal shelter is trying out some new ideas in a 90-day trial this summer to increase pet adoptions from the facility. The changes include longer hours, free adoptions for seniors and an upgraded nutrition program for all shelter animals.

The shelter is now open for adoptions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until 8:00pm and has extended Saturday hours from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Hours on Wednesdays and Fridays remain the same at 10:00am until 4:00pm and the shelter is still closed to the public on Sunday and Monday.

A new “Paws for Seniors” program offers unlimited free adoptions to anyone over 55 plus reduced veterinary fees for adopted shelter animals. The shelter has also upgraded to the Hill’s Science Diet Nutrition Program to keep its animals healthy.

Gwinnett Police Corporal Illana Spellman reminded residents that the new shelter is located near Briscoe Field airport on U.S. Highway 29 in Lawrenceville. Animal control officers are on duty from 8:00am to midnight and on call after hours.

The shelter’s telephone number is 770.339.3200 and the website is www.gwinnettanimalcontrol.com. Photos of cats and dogs that are up for adoption can be viewed online.

By the way, the pictured dog is available for adoption. The shelter's identification number to reference if you are interested in adopting this cute male dog is 4338. What a sweetheart!

Youth Minister, Magician Charged with Child Molestation

This incident occurred in Cobb County, but I am sharing it here because it involves kids and, hey, [alleged] criminals have cars!

"We want anyone who has seen Mr. Wasley at a Target store, whether it was on Ernest Barrett Parkway or any location, if he was doing anything that looked suspicious to please contact us," said Cassie Reece with the Cobb County Police Department.

Jeffrey Alan Wasley, 37, is accused of molesting a 7-year-old boy Monday in the men's restroom of the Target store at 740 Ernest Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw.

The AJC article says he has/had a website for his magic business. I looked up the WHOIS information for that domain name, and I find it strange that it wasn't registered under his full name. It was registered under the name Jeff Alan. I'm not saying this proves guilt of course, but just that you can really consider that different from normal. Use of initials, like J.A. Wasley, or even just Magic Jeff, I could understand, but just using first and middle name just strikes me as a little worrisome, especially if I had hired him to do a magic show for my kids...I would be very very concerned right now.

Pedophiles do work to get themselves in positions of trust with children. The article says that Calvary Jesus Church refused to comment. I wonder if they did any background checks. I think that churches are generally too trusting and should require background checks of anyone who will have access to children, and that includes even the Senior Ministers. Yes it costs money, but it's worth it. Take up a special collection tomorrow if your church doesn't do background checks, will ya?!?

I do hope for the child's sake and for Mr. Wasley's sake, that the child from the incident at the Target store was mistaken, but I also believe that we have to believe children 100% until it's proven wrong. I really feel for Mr. Wasley's wife and kids, and I pray that this will end up being a misunderstanding. I don't think the article said how old the child victim is, but I do think that most children are smart enought to know the difference between a kindly hand on their shoulder and a sexually oriented touch. Adults should also know that even a friendly hand on the shoulder isn't appropriate in a restroom when the child's parent or guardian isn't present.

Here is some good information from the Child Molestation Research and Prevention Institute.

If you have seen this man behave suspiciously, you are urged to call the Cobb County Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit at 770-801-3470.

How Do You Accept Responsibility?

I have been thinking some more about the events at the City Council meeting last night (click here for the back story).

I understand Council Member Tod Warner's frustration that people don't show up for meetings until the problem is in their own backyard. I think we all should take part in our local government more than we do (especially myself)...

But, on the other hand, why do residents vote to elect a City Council and other local, city, and US Government representatives? We do that for them to represent us so we don't all have to show up...otherwise, all 18,000 or so residents would need to jam up City Hall. The council members were voted in to work in our best interests. I realize too that it's impossible for anybody to catch everything.

We know everyone's human and Mr. Warner admitted he dropped the ball. Kudos to him for the admission and saying he would accept the blame for it. But I think people aren't just looking for someone to blame. They're wanting a solution to the problem, as well as assurances that a situation like this won't happen again in the future.

To say he takes responsibility for the slip up, and then to turn around immediately and blame the 200 people present is a (sorry mom!) bass-ackwards way of doing it. If you accept responsibility, you accept responsibility. If you want to blame another person or a group for something, then do it, but it doesn't work to accept fault and then pass it on. That's the way I think, anyway. Call me crazy.

"Crazy!!!"

Oh hush.

Funeral for Marvin W. Claborn Sr. of Snellville

"... general contractor for 35 years, he had been a star athlete in football and track in high school, and football and boxing in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a regular tennis player and golfer at the old Fairington Country Club."

[was held] at 2 p.m. today at Tom M. Wages, Snellville Chapel."

"Survivors other than his wife and brother include two daughters, Celia Grams of Snellville and Lisa Marie Herman of Covington; two sons, Marvin W. "J.R." Claborn Jr. of McDonough and Matthew Claborn of Las Vegas; and one grandson."

....More

Deepest condolences to his family.

Man Chained Up in Lilburn Home for Nearly a Week in Drug-Debt Ransom Attempt

"Mexican organized crime is moving large amounts of cocaine,
methamphetamine and marijuana into the country, Benson said.

Gwinnett is the focal point for the Mexican drug trade here
because of easy access on I-85 and a large Hispanic population
where drug traffickers can try to blend in, U.S. Attorney David Nahmias said.

Representatives of Mexican drug cartels in Atlanta are
"clashing with each other," Benson said.

"That's pretty terrifying to most citizens in our state," Nahmias said."

Full story at AJC.com

I so want our borders secured. This is crazy. Either secure our borders or make the drugs legal so there's no money in it for organized criminals. (Legalizing drugs probably wouldn't work either...they'd just move onto something else they can get their tentacles on...read about the Naples trash crisis for an example). How are we ever going to win against these scumbags? I don't care what country they're coming from...our borders should be secured. As a mom, the world these days scares me.

200 Residents at City Council Meeting Treated to Free Scolding

I expected the crematorium's plans would be considered a "done deal." Here are a couple snippets from the AJC article for you, and to read the whole thing, see the clickable link at the end of this post. I smell lawsuits regardless.

"Warner said an attorney cautioned him on the loophole, but he never expected one to pop up.

City leaders weren't sure how the crowd would react to the controversy, so extra police were stationed at City Hall.

Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer also took some extra steps to
keep things calm, immediately announcing some ground rules.
"We ask you to maintain some decorum," he told the standing-room only crowd. "It's going to be a long night."

"I ask for no public attacks, no name calling," he said to anyone
who planned to speak. "We do have the press here.
No calling out or shouting. We have some police here."

....

[Councilman][Tod]"Warner said an attorney cautioned him on
the loophole, but he never expected one to pop up.
But he also spread the blame.

"Shame on you," he told the crowd. "You never show up
for the decisions that we have to make until they're in your backyard."

Snellville City Council Meeting July 14

Monday, July 14 - Council Meeting -
6:30 p.m. Work Session,
7:30 p.m. Meeting
Snellville City Hall, Oak Road

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Perhaps you can find something to talk about.
Skim through this blog for ideas...lol

Maybe this, or.... this, ....or this or this.
You know, just have fun at the meeting.

If an issue has you really incensed, it's great to be passionate, but try to remain calm and I've found that more people will listen and take what Is said to heart. Whenever I get too worked up, I just look like the loony I am.

42 Cents for a STICKER?!?!

Gwinnett Buzz Blogger is upset that we pay $27 for 20 official Snellville Trash Bags, in reference to my post yesterday titled, When You Have Too Much Trash.

"$1.35 for a trash bag!" He exclaims in shock. Well, I appreciate his concern for my finances, but
he's missing the point. It isn't $1.35 just for a trash bag. We are paying for the service and the bag.

You could look at US Postage Stamps with the same air of disgust: AHHHH! 42 cents for a sticker!!! But of course, we all know a postage stamp is not just a sticker. Our Official Snellville Trash Bags are not just trash bags.

I like that the trash bags are only paid for by those who USE them. I can have them on hand for the occasional times my household trash output is high.

I would rather pay this myself when I need the extra service, than to have everyone in Snellville taxed to pay for the overall occasional extra trash some people in Snellville have. The only problem with the program is that so many people can't understand it, and as new people move in, they all have to be educated about it.

Snellville has it's problems, but the Official Trash Bags aren't one of them.

But GwinnettBuzz Blogger has a good point, saying: "I suspect many homes’ garbage usage averages out over the course of a year."

Snellville Kroger Deals

If you need to go to the grocery store, I've broken down most of the Kroger deals for this week here, and linked to places where you can look for free printable coupons - also where and when the manufacturer's coupon can be located. Let me know if it helps you!

When You Have Too Much Trash...

If all your trash won't fit into your trash can, there is a solution. I've written about this before, but it seems like there are still people who don't know about the Official Blue Snellville Trash Bags!

If all your trash won't fit in your trash can, don't try to do an elaborate, precipitously balanced display of bags on top of your trash can. Most of the time, the Robertson Sanitation guys will not take those bags, no matter how gorgeously Suessian you balanced them. They aren't impressed, but the U.S. Government may approve you for an art grant.

"To insure that any extra trash will be picked up,
you will need to purchase City Snellville extra trash bags.
The bags are available at
Publix and Kroger on
Scenic Hwy, City Hall and the Public Works office.
Place your extra trash inside the blue bags alongside
your cart on your regularly scheduled pick up day. "

The blue trash bags do cost - it is $27 for a box of 20 bags... each bag holds 32 gallons. They are huge bags, and if you use them, stuff them to the max, but they can't weigh more than 50 pounds each for pickup.

I kind of think of it like postage for my trash, but really it's just paying more if you need to dump more - I like the idea of only those who need a service are paying for it.

It keeps everyone from being charged or taxed additionally, when they may not produce much waste. So, I think it's pretty fair. Our family produces a lot of trash. I try to fill the recycle bin all I can. Using your recycle bin is one way to reduce the waste that's filling up your trash can. We have a great recycling center here in Snellville and I should try to use it more, too.

If you have cardboard boxes you would like to recycle, they must be taken to the Snellville Recycling Center, located right behind the Elizabeth William's Library Branch on Lenora Church Road. Boxes and cardboard are not picked up curbside for recycling. If you want to get rid of cardboard boxes from your curb, then you will need to put them in your trash bin or put them in the blue prepaid Snellville trash bags...but keep in mind, they won't be recycled if you do that.

You can recycle as many items as you want to though - and if it won't all fit in your recycling bin, you can put them in a bag clearly marked RECYCLING on set the bag on top of the recycling bin.

If you have yard waste, did you know the City can send a wood chipper out to your house? The charge for city crews to come out and operate the wood chipper is $35.00 for up to 1 hour. If you need this additional service or have questions, contact the sanitation department at 770-985-3527.

Bannister's Use of County Commissioner's Seal on Postcard...

...may be a no-no.

Maybe it's going to be okay because the seal was tilted a bit to 'un-official' it...I don't know.
Bob Griggs has pictures of the postcard, front and back, on his site here.

Do you care about this? Yes? No? Is it just nit pickin nonsense, or do you feel strongly about the use of the seal on the promotional mailer? It seems like a little thing, but I'm sure the use of the official seal is protected by law.

Whew, I gotta be honest and tell you that there's too much research involved in that for me to look into that right now. Find a more skilled political blogger. I know, I know, I'm being very lazy. Political stuff just doesn't interest me very much...I try to care though, I really, really do.

Some Residents Find Free Newspapers Annoying

I get what I call 'mini newspapers' every Thursday, courtesy of the AJC. Maybe you've seen them, maybe you get them. It's a section of the paper plus coupon inserts and sales circulars. I like getting them. Hey, free coupons! But apparently, there are a lot of people who HATE them.

Hate them with such a burning passion that they refuse to pick them up out of their driveway.

Ok, I know they didn't order it, they didn't ask for it, and it's annoying to them. But how much work is it to bend over and pick it up?

Why would you allow 6 of them to pile up...until they turn into a gray sludge on their driveway? After week 3, I think I would realize that nobody's going to come by and pick them up for me.
Boy, it looks sooo tacky.

If you don't want yours, I'll take it. Especially the coupons. Send them to:

Snellville Mailboxes Under Strain from Election

Check your mailbox today. LOTS of postcards and mailers from candidates. You know an election is just around the corner when you get these.

Charles Bannister's is the biggest. The mailer, that is. Wow, you have a dirty mind! His isn't a postcard though, it's a brochure that's folded but not sealed up with anything. I'm amazed it arrived in one piece.

Oh wait, here's a big postcard - also from Charles Bannister. He's covering all the bases.

Hmmm (rubbing chin)...Mike Beaudreau's postcard is about half an inch shorter in height than Charles Bannister's and Doug Stacks'. But, their postcards are the same length, so don't worry.

Once I get past analyzing the size and presentation of these postcards, I might actually read them. In the bathroom. If I get bored in the bathroom. If I get a chance to read in the bathroom without toddlers banging on the door yelling "Mommy! Mommy!"

Yes, if and when, I may read them.

I'll have to get back to you...

Stipple Portraits - portraits created out of dots

I have an order to draw 11 portraits all drawn in ink dots and dashes, in the style similar to the famous Wall Street Journal "Hedcut" portraits. They're called Hedcuts because newspapers use the 'hed' as an abbreviation for 'headline'.

Each one will be the size of a baseball card - 2.5" x 3.5"and because they're all in ink, there is no margin (or room on such a tiny card) for error. I have already finished one of them. I really like doing these. They are fun to do, but I have to stay really alert while drawing one. Because it's ink, if I make an error, I need to start all over from scratch.

These are kind of neat to have to nudge people into thinking you were featured in the famous newspaper, or just to have as an original work of art, or to represent you as your website avatar or in online groups. Have one done of your dog? Why not! It's a really unique gift.

If you are interested in having one done, please contact me through my website form for more information. I'd be glad to put your portrait on my 'to do' list!

Woman with Memory Loss Missing from Snellville

UPDATE: Mrs. Harris has been found.

The police need your help...

"....
James Harris of Norcross underwent surgery this week at
Emory Eastside Medical Center. His wife, 65-year-old
Renee Antoinette Harris, left the hospital Wednesday
about 10 a.m. to return to their Norcross home but called
her husband about 10 p.m. Wednesday from her cell phone,
saying she was lost. She was in the Gainesville area on
Jesse Jewell Parkway at the time.
Harris gave directions so she could get to I-85.

She called her husband again and said she
was spending the night at a Hampton Inn. Police investigation couldn't find any record of her staying at a Hampton Inn. Her cell phone is dead and they haven't been able to reach her.

According to her husband, she has undiagnosed dementia and memory loss.

"...
Harris was last seen wearing a white blouse with a red full skirt and jeweled flip flops. She has blond hair and blue eyes. She is 5'6," approximately 200 pounds and has scarring on her left forearm. She is driving a 2002 dark blue Honda Accord, tag number AFD 5209."

If you have any information on her whereabouts, please contact the Gwinnett County Police.
I hope we can get Mrs. Harris home right away.

Crematorium Protesters Called "Cry Babies"

Click Here for UPDATE on Snellville crematory July 14, 2008

Speaking out anonymously, a person posting to the Rants and Raves
section of Craigslist had this to say:

"
Supposedly there's a crematorium almost complete
in Gwinnett.
Just saw it on the news.
They got this steel chimney coming out the house

sort of like a regular house but more leaning
towards a Sonny's BBQ.

Anyway. One of the mothers said it would not be
good for her kids to see this
when driving by
Said " it would remind them of death too much" !
Uhm... mam ?

What's on the news every morning ?
Is there a cemetery near you.?

That doesn't remind you of death ?
The sooner you fill your kids in that

they're "gonna die one day" --the better off they'll be mam.
And yes, when you drive by,
the smoke coming out the
chimney is of burning human flesh

and bones. Read more from these cry babies here:

crematory-next-door.html
"

Link to full posting and curse words here.
Thanks for the free website traffic though!

Although I don't agree with the bluntness of the post, to some extent I understand what he/she is saying. Death IS a part of life. I try to think of it as the final stage of life. It's important to explain death to kids and what is happening at the crematory.

My uncle was a funeral director. He owned the only funeral home company in a five county area in Texas. When I was a teenager, he allowed me in to watch him prepare a body. Everything is done with respect. It's important to help kids understand that what is done to the body after death is not felt by the person. They no longer feel any pain. Cremation is not painful to the body...the person is dead. It's not morbid, it's a service.

My father was cremated in 2005. I actually personally prefer the idea of cremation to burial.
The reason I prefer it is that I don't like the idea of my father's body being in the ground, decomposing. Cremation seems more pleasant to me.

Hubs feels that traditional burial is important because there is a grave site and a marker. My father does have a final resting place and a marker, in the new Dallas-Ft. Worth Veteran's Cemetery in Dallas Texas...so although I do find gravesites important for genealogy reasons, there's no reason why you can't have a grave site AND a marker for your remains if you are cremated.

With everyone being so concerned with the environment, I would think that overall, cremation is better for the environment. Traditional burial replaces body fluids with chemicals. Cremation burns the body at a very high temperature. Contrary to what the Craigslist poster said, the crematory isn't going to release smoke of burning flesh and bones. It will have filtration systems, so only some heat will be released.

With cremation, there isn't the cost of an expensive coffin that's all fancified to look like a comfortable bed with a satin pillow. The only reason for that is to comfort the family. That's a good reason, but I don't think a good enough reason to pay $12,000 for just a coffin (my uncle had a "Showroom" of coffins, urns, and accessories). It can get ridiculous.

Now you know I am not opposed to cremation at all. I'm all for it and that's what I want done when my time comes. But, I still wouldn't want to live right next to one.

It comes down to property values, and that most potential buyers would not the cremation center next door either. It comes down to residents feeling like they weren't represented or protected enough by the City of Snellville in the zoning ordinances. Snellville residents want their home to be worth more than a loaf of bread. The word that probably sums it all up the closest is DISMAY.

AJC Writes about the Crematory Next Door

AJC Writer/Blogger Susan Gast has written a
great post about the crematorium
that Cremation Society of the South is preparing to open for business in August 2008 at the corner of Abington and US78/Main Street in Snellville.
Check it out if you would like more details on the situation.

The Crematory Next Door...

Residents in the Abington neighborhood near US78/Main Street are concerned about a crematorium that is planned to be built at 2098 East Main Street, Snellville 30078.

The residents are disappointed with the City of Snellville, because when Commercial Zoning was approved for the area, it was approved with conditions. So residents thought that the space would only be used for business offices like a law firm or an insurance office. They didn't really expect a business that burns human or animal remains to be built there, so imagine their dismay.

The crematorium has not yet obtained their license, and the residents plan to fight it. One of their major concerns is air quality, and that there is a school bus stop nearby.

If you are interested in filing a complaint you can go to this website:
https://secure.sos.state.ga.us/myverification/SubmitComplaint.aspx
2098 East Main Street Snellville, GA 30078 is the address.

I'm not sure about what the health concerns are regarding crematories. I think modern crematories are probably blanketed with laws and regulations that make the process pretty safe, but still - I don't know if I would personally want to LIVE next to one...what do you think about it?

Would you want to live next to a cremation facility?

Here's a house portrait I completed recently. The mat and frame are done in a digital art program. I did this 'mock-up' to show how it could look matted and framed. I always hate how scans or digital photos of my art look. I can never get a good clear picture of them.

This one is mixed media - it's mostly colored pencil, but the sky is scrapbooking chalk, which is basically a pastel. I love how it makes a soft sky.

The windows take a looong time to do. I also usually leave trees out of pictures if they block the house, but this one is right at the corner of the house, so I decided I should keep the tree rather than try to fake how the edges of the eaves look. I do house portraits (or portraits of business buildings and churches) in graphite pencil for about $250 each (depends a lot on the house) and colored/mixed media house portraits like this one for $400 each. Snellville Kroger Weekly Deals

I have a run-down of the weekly sales ad items from Kroger, here in SnellvilleShops.com.

Most of the better deals are from the Meat Department. Maybe they find that they have trouble moving the fresh meat after the 4th of July weekend (because everyone has a lot of leftovers from grilling!)

Snellville QT Sign of the Times

This is a photo I took yesterday of the price sign at QT at the corner of Rockdale Circle and US78.
I'm going to stare at it and work on getting used to seeing that 4 there...

There are some resources online for finding the least expensive gas. Here is the page for Snellville gas prices at AtlantaGasPrices.com. There is also a site called GasBuddy.com you may want to check out. I also have some tips for saving money on gas and everything else .

Have you seen the new milk containers?

Yup. They have been redesigned to save on waste. Some people are having a lot of trouble pouring milk from them though, because of the spout position - and/or lack of a spout. You think I'm kidding you, right? It's not a hoax...they look odd but we will get used to them I guess! LINK

Snellville's 4th of July

IMPORTANT!!!! PLEASE NOTE, THIS POST IS FROM 2008

===================================

I hope you had a nice 4th of July. We had hot dogs, Bush's Grillin Beans, Doritos, Coke, and watermelon at home. We watched the fireworks from one of the South Gwinnett High School parking lots. The weather was perfect. As I get older, I find I am really appreciating good weather - low humidity and a gentle breeze!

My 4 year old son was very reserved through the whole thing. I thought he would be more excited about the fireworks, because we weren't able to see any last year. I guess it takes a lot to impress kids these days (?)...my 2-1/2 year old son started out watching the fireworks, but suddenly shrieked in fear by the time the 8th firework went up, and he leaped into my lap, hugged me tight, and closed his eyes. He thinks if he closes his eyes, scary stuff goes away. I covered his ears.

I've found some nice things for us to enjoy today about yesterday's 4th of July events:

A great blog post about appreciating being an American.

If you didn't get to go, here's GadgetGeek's photos of the car show.

Local real estate agent Jamie Parker has some nice photos of the Snellville event here. He says that one of the volunteers told him they had cooked over 8,000 hamburgers by 7:30 pm.

It was a huge turnout! I told Hubs that I hope this blog had a little something to do with that, and he chuckled. How DARE he scoff at my Snellville Blog Empire?!? So I just looked it up.

This post brought 740 hits, and this post brought 262 hits, meaning that 1,002 found this blog as a source of information for their Independence Day fun. I'm happy with 1,002.

When I showed Hubs the figures, he had the nerve to ask,
"...and how much money did that make you?"
I...eh...er....um...nothing.
Anybody want to tip me?

I would love it if the 1,002 people would return here and just post a comment about what they thought about the events!
