There was an armed robbery early this morning at the Checkers Restaurant on Scenic Hwy in Snellville. The restaurant was robbed of their planned bank deposit.
Snellville Chief of Police Roy Whitehead distributed an email to Mayor Oberholtzer and Snellville City Council members this morning that tells more about what happened. Chief Whitehead praises the quality of members of the Snellville Police Department.
By the way, I'm removing the first names of the dispatchers, officers, etc and replacing with their initials to give a little privacy and safety from weirdos, but leaving their last names, because I want them to get the credit they deserve!
"We had an armed robbery at Checkers on Hwy 124 this morning at 3:15 a.m. The suspect fled on foot in a red hoodie running toward Dogwood Road. The victims immediately got on the cell phone and reported the crime and description. Dispatcher, A. Bailey immediately gave out the information. Ofc. E. Washburn, who was on his way home from working an off-duty job, had just pulled into his residence when the call came out. He knew he was close, so he responded immediately in his take home vehicle. As he approached the New Jerusalem Church on Dogwood Road, he observed a black male, wearing a red hoodie come out of the wood line with a weapon in his hand.
Ofc. Washburn turned into the driveway of the church and the suspect began to run. He was following him through the grass as he approached bushes, a power pole and a ditch. [Officer Washburn] knew that he was trapped with the vehicle, so he slid to a stop as the suspect stumbled. [Officer Washburn] jumped out of his vehicle knowing that he was going to be in a foot pursuit. As he got out, he saw that his vehicle had come to rest on the suspect’s foot, essentially trapping him. The impact with the suspect resulted in the gun being dropped on the ground, just out of the reach of the trapped suspect. Ofc. B. Rankin was there in just seconds and they moved the vehicle off the suspect’s foot, taking him into custody. Ofc. J. Manley and Cpl. D. Peters arrived shortly thereafter to assist.
A search incident to arrest of the suspect produced the deposit taken from Checkers. EMS responded and they and the suspect advised that he was fine and needed no further treatment. We transported him to the police department and will interview him concerning his involvement in other cases. Sgt. Gunter and Capt. Thomas responded to conduct the follow-up investigation.
Another example of the caliber of personnel we have working for us. I am extremely proud of the efforts of all the personnel involved and especially that of Ofc. Washburn. I commend everyone who brought this matter to a successful conclusion for a job well done."
