Trunk or Treat Event
What is Trunk or Treat? It's like trick or treating, except instead of going from house to house, you go from car trunk to trunk in a parking lot (usually at a church). We tried for the first time last year. Now I think I prefer it.
It's a lot of fun for everyone involved, because the people who give out the candy actually WANT to have trick or treaters come to their car. People decorate their cars, and it's really festive.
Cannon United Methodist Church will have a Trunk or Treat event on Friday, October 31, 2008 from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. This allows the event to finish up in plenty of time so you can still do the traditional door-to-door trick or treating if you want to do that.
Cannon UMC will also have a pizza dinner served from 5:30 pm until 6:15 pm for $2 per person.
There will be a Veggie Tales movie playing for the kids to enjoy while they eat.
Cannon Church is located at 2424 Webb Gin House Rd, Snellville GA 30078 (convenient to Ronald Reagan Parkway).
For more information, please see Cannon United Methodist Church's website.

Addictions Help at Snellville United Methodist Church
- Are you worried about a family member or friend who has, or may have, an addiction?
- Do you wish you could safely and confidentially talk about your own addiction without being judged?
- Are you wondering how or when to talk to your child about drugs and alcohol?
The Faith Partners team ministry concept was developed over many years by the Johnson Institute in Texas. The Institute determined that churches were the ideal places for faith and science to come together to treat the epidemic of addiction disease. Faith Partners ministries now operate in churches in many states.
At Snellville United Methodist Church, Faith Partners has four goals:
- To create a healing environment where addictions can be discussed openly, without judgment.
- To provide sound educational materials and events
- To offer specific support, assistance and referral resources to individuals and families
- To recognize and honor successful recovery.
Find out more information on the Faith Partners Team of Snellville United Methodist Church at www.SnellvilleUMC.org/faithpartners or call Ella Collier at 770-972-9360.

Snellville Drunk Driving Incidents
"SNELLVILLE - A Snellville police officer was released from the hospital Tuesday after a drunken driver T-boned his cruiser last weekend, officials said.
Officer Brian Rankin, 23, underwent surgery for a broken hip sustained when Antonio Todd Gore, 45, of Loganville ran a red light and plowed his Lincoln Navigator in the officer's driver's side door, police said.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Skyland Drive and U.S. Highway 78 in Snellville."
Police: Drunk driver sends officer to hospital
Gwinnett Daily Post - Griffin,GA,USA
There was a second person driving drunk who slammed into a parked police car at this scene. If you want to drink, then go for it if you want to damage your liver, it's your body and it's up to you. But just stay home -- don't get out and drive!
I know I am emotional about this, because about 6 years ago, I was driving a little Honda Civic hatchback on Halloween night and was almost T-boned by someone running the light at the same intersection -- Skyland Drive and Hwy 78.
I remember the event clearly, because my twin daughters were about 8 years old at the time. I did fine during the incident...I was actually proud of my offensive driving skills, but I had to pull over into a parking lot to stop shaking after I thought about what could have happened.
Well, enough about me. I hope Officer Rankin will heal well and be back on his feet soon!
Gwinnett Police Officer Worthy of Award
"Officer James Huth was stationed outside a house in Sugar Hill on Jan. 3 when he heard gunshots. Police were there to arrest William Caram, 37, for allegedly fleeing from a sobriety checkpoint in Suwanee. However, Caram opened fire on two officers with a high-powered rifle in an upstairs hallway.
Cpl. William M. Hoch was shot in the leg and Sgt. Michael P. McKeithan was shot in the abdomen and wrist.
Huth ran inside, darted up the stairs and exchanged gunfire with Caram.
Police said Caram retreated into his bedroom nursing a gunshot wound to his arm. Huth seized the opportunity to carry McKeithan out of the house.
He then provided cover while the wounded officers were moved to a safer position."

New Principal of South Gwinnett High School
South Gwinnett High School has a new principal, Clay Hunter. The following was written by Mr. Hunter and comes from The Comet Courier, the South Gwinnett High School Newsletter.
"I am a graduate of Morehouse College and the University of Georgia. I have a passion for social studies and taught a myriad of courses at Milton High School in Alpharetta. I also taught social studies at Norcross High School. I have served as an assistant principal at Meadowcreek High School and McConnell Middle School. Just recently, I served as principal of Susan Stripling Elementary School in Norcross.
In total, this is my thirteenth year in education. When I am not working, I enjoy spending
time with my wife and three children ages 12, 8, and 3. I know South Gwinnett High School to be a great institution of learning. It has a long tradition of producing leaders in the region and the state. Love for this school runs deep. Having had a chance to talk with a number of leaders in the community, I can sense the pride that is associated with being a South Gwinnett Comet.
Over this past weekend, I had the opportunity to interact with a number of students. I have talked with our peer leaders, senior leadership cabinet, band members, football team, and theatre guild. Without a doubt our students are outstanding!
Having had a chance to talk to a number of students, parents, and community members, I have learned more about some of the expectations these stakeholders have for our school. First and foremost, we all want South Gwinnett High School to be a safe, orderly environment in which to learn and work. I am committed to working with students, teachers, and parents to help our students make the right choices in terms of behavior.
Gwinnett County Public Schools’ student management policies and procedures will be adhered to at South Gwinnett High School. It is also a community expectation that all of our students will graduate from high school in four years. We all know how challenging our world is in terms of jobs and the economy. Our students must have a diploma if they are to create and live the American Dream. In addition to a diploma, our students must be prepared to enter and be successful in college and the workforce. Whatever path they choose, they must have the academic knowledge and skills in order to be successful. The wonderful educators at South Gwinnett High School work day in and day out to make that happen. I look forward to working with and supporting them as we implement new and innovative techniques to help all students maximize their potential.
Finally, our community wants to know about the great things that are going on at South Gwinnett. To this end, we will expand our efforts to tell our story… making sure more know about the wonderful achievements of our students and staff. I know that perception can sometimes morph itself into reality.
We need to set the story straight when it comes to the “reality” at South Gwinnett High. The truth is that the majority of our students make the right choices every day, academically and behaviorally. As we move forward, we need to work together and talk about ways for us to help all students make the right choices. In the coming weeks, we will be organizing a meeting so that you can meet me formally. We must begin discussing how to build upon the great things already taking place at South Gwinnett. The challenge of making sure that our students are successful is one that we must all share. I look forward to talking with you in the coming months. Together we can find solutions that will help our students maximize their full potential."

Helping Our Neighbors
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know we are in some rough times, but today I checked for some of the keywords and phrases that people used when they found this website. I use this data so I can add things to the blog that readers really want.
Just 6 months ago, I would see entries like "dentist snellville ga" or "dog adoption gwinnett."
But lately, the search queries have been things like (and these are real by the way): "where to sell my blood for money gwinnett ga;" and "what day are gwinnett evictions done." There are also a lot of searches for local food banks.
The two queries about selling blood and when to expect the eviction were just TODAY.
I stopped looking after I saw those two. Who needs to see more? People are hurting. What can we do to help? I know I need to really work to make this blog more of a useful resource for people.
Now, we can get all depressed, whine and place blame on politicians, or we can take action. A simple thing to do is just start donating food to a food bank, if you don't already do so. It doesn't have to be a financial stress on you. For example, when you shop at a store that offers buy one get one free deals (like Publix), you could donate the free item.
We can also think about what talents we have that we can share to help someone. I know money is tight for our family too, but we just need to buckle down and think of a way. I will be thinking of resources that would be useful for someone in a money crunch, and how to find help...hopefully really useful information that I can add to this blog or SnellvilleBlog.Blogspot.com.
If you have any ideas, I would love to hear from you.

Power Outage in Snellville & People Driving Into Ditches
Snellville Police, Fire/EMS, and emergency dispatchers certainly had their hands full this morning.
I was at Snellville United Methodist Church when the power went out, and by the time I was out of the building, I saw several EMS and Fire vehicles, so I knew something was going on. By the time I got home, a helicopter was hovering around, so that got me curious enough to listen to the scanner feed of the Snellville Police that's available on ScanGwinnett.com
If you listen to the communication feeds and make some notes like I did, you will see what a great job all our emergency personnel do in Snellville! They can deal with anything from the mundane to the insane in minutes. It's amazing to me how calm they can remain.
So here's what I found out from the Police Scanner feed, along with some of my personal comments.
A little after 10:30 am, a power grid went down, causing most of the center of Snellville to lose power. Power failure of the traffic signals was a huge problem. Power was out from Henry Clower Blvd, areas all around Scenic Hwy/124 in Snellville up to Dogwood Road. Police were kept busy dealing with accidents and directing traffic.
The intersection of Hwy 78 and Hwy 124 is difficult even when everything's working well, but with the lights out, it was mass confusion because drivers fail to recognize that intersection as a 4-way stop if the lights are non-functional. If you read this blog regularly, you'll know that one of my pet peeves is that people don't know what to do at a 4-way stop...and those are the non-electric 4 way stops! If you take a 4-way stop that usually has traffic signals, and it doesn't have the signals due to power outtage, watch out, something BAD is going to happen! There was an accident between a moving van and a minivan at 78 and Hwy 124.
Power was restored by 11:30 am, but signals at Hwy 124 and the Snellville Pavilion shopping center needed a key to reset the light, which was flashing yellow. The light wanted to be ornery, and it wouldn't reset, so they had to call out Snellville Traffic Engineers to fix it.
All this is going on, a black Chevy Suburban was stolen, or it was broken into, in front of the Old Navy store on Hwy 124. I'm not sure which it was, I could only hear that it was "theft."
But that was not enough. A 2000 Silver Mercury vehicle was partially in a ditch on Skyland Drive near Street DeVille. The car was registered to someone with a Loganville/Grayson address. Can you believe that people make a special trip into Snellville just to drive into our ditches?!? Do they not have ditches in Loganville or Grayson? They really should get their own ditches. It's just really rude to come here and use our ditches. That's all I'm going to say about that. ;-)
So have a better day than the Snellville Police had! I still don't know why the power grid failed.

National Suit Drive at Men's Wearhouse
Men's Wearhouse is having their first annual National Suit Drive. Men's Wearhouse locations will accept donations of used suits through October 31st. The donations are distributed by local nonprofit organizations, and benefit at-risk men who are transitioning into the workforce. Men's Wearhouse is even donating a new dress shirt to go with every suit that is received.
"How It Works:
Simply visit your nearest Men's Wearhouse store during the months of September and October and donate professional clothing, such as suits, sport coats, slacks, ties, and belts. All donations are tax deductible, and participants will receive a coupon for 10% off* their next Men's Wearhouse purchase as a special thank you. Plus, we'll contribute a new dress shirt for every suit we receive. "
I think this is just great. I was recently in our Snellville location of Men's Wearhouse, and I have to tell you that the guys who work there are just wonderful, down-to-earth people. If you have a suit to donate, or have been needing to buy a suit, you should definitely go over there and let them help you look your best.
In Snellville, Men's Wearhouse is located in the small strip center in front of Old Navy and Belk, etc. The address is 2055 Scenic Hwy N # 1, Snellville, GA 30078. The store phone number is 770-972-2667.
If you want to let out of the area friends know about the National Suit Drive, they can find out where to donate by visiting nationalsuitdrive.com
