January 22, 2009 20:09 EST ATLANTA (AP) -- A Georgia man accused of running a drug ring that sold at least a ton of cocaine through South Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors said Thursday that 40-year-old Steven Spigner of Snellville, Ga., had couriers using vehicles with secret compartments for storing drugs and money, and carrying guns to further the drug trafficking and money laundering scheme.
Spigner's wife, 31-year-old Yojuana Spigner, also was sentenced Thursday, to three years in prison for misprision of a felony.
Prosecutors said he used a shell company called Spigner Investment Group to launder illegal proceeds and amassed more than $1 million in forfeited assets, including a Bentley and other expensive cars, real estate and bank accounts.

Briscoe Park Improvements
This long-awaited project is now getting underway. Bids are currently being accepted for Phase I of the Briscoe Park renovation. Construction should begin in early March and be completed by July.
These improvements will be made primarily to the lake side of the park to include additional parking, road, walkway, fitness trail and lake improvements, a new playground and restroom, and the first half of a new soccer complex.

It’s time to renew your Senior Center Membership for the new year or you could join for the first time. The Snellville Senior Center is open to adults and seniors starting at age 50.
Prices are as follows: $15 per person for Snellville City Limit Residents, $25 per person for
Gwinnett County Residents and $35 for out of county residents. The Senior Center offers regular exercise programs, card clubs, computer classes, use of the workout room, day and overnight trips and so much more.

Apartment Fire in Snellville - Wiloaks Dr
A small fire broke out in an apartment unit on Wiloaks Drive in Snellville. Nobody was hurt, but residents of the other apartments had to sit in their cars in the cold until given the all clear to go back inside. The fire started from a clothes dryer. More

- Know where your shoes are, so in case of emergency you'll have 'em.
- Clean out your clothes dryer filter before every load. Clothing fibers are extremely flammable!!!
- Use a clothes dryer vent brush to get down deeper and remove the extra lint that gets past the filter.
- Use a clothes dryer hose brush to get the lint out of the hose
- Make sure your dryer vent hose isn't plastic. The old plastic vent hoses are still sold in stores, but they are no longer compliant with safety code. Replace with a metal hose.
- If you're renting, get renter's insurance. It's not as expensive as you think. Ask yourself whether you'd like to pay a small amount each month, or if you would like to replace all your belongings and clothing out of your own pocket after a crisis.

Snellville Commerce Club insert riles some
The insert for the private commerce club was put in with official Snellville mailings.
I received this flyer with my occupational tax notice. I did do a little bit of a double-take, knowing that the Snellville Commerce Club is a separate entity from the City of Snellville, but it didn't bother me at all.
The statement in the article about the Commerce Club footing any bill for additonal postage wouldn't really apply, because the piece of paper was 2.5"x 8.5" and normal paper, so it wouldn't incur additional postage. I would like to know that the Commerce Club paid for the paper, the printing, and the cutting.
I wonder if the city would put an ad in the next mailing for MySnellvilleBlog? (keep dreaming)

This is certainly a tragedy. The lady and her husband lived in the Oak Meadow Subdivision. The woman was 87 or 88 years old and was stabbed multiple times.

Pancake Breakfast begins at 8:00 am, along with a live video feed from the Athletes in Action Superbowl Breakfast being held in Tampa Bay that week.

Tuesday Snellville Musings
Have you driven down North Road lately? It's like House For Rent City there. I probably saw almost 10 homes for rent in a row on North today.
If I had money to invest, I'd buy up all those North Road properties. They can only go up in value, and when you consider what a nice bulk of land they would make together, and how valuable that would be in say, 5-10 years as Commercial zoned land. Maybe Wayne Mason is thinking about it?
Have you seen the block of land for sale at the corner of Wisteria and North, just behind the Snellville Post Office? Are you wondering as I am why the Postal Service isn't buying that land so they could enlarge the Snellville Post Office? That post office is so busy, and the parking lot is just a mess. I hate to say this, but someone is going to get backed over and hurt in that Snellville post office parking lot eventually. The layout is part of the problem - the other part of the problem is that people just seem dazed and preoccupied when they are leaving the post office, and they just walk right out in front of cars without any awareness of their surroundings. That plot of land could really help the situation at the Snellville Post Office. Maybe they have lost their will to live after standing in line there...lol
My uncle died on Saturday. Wait, hold your condolences. Although sad that he died of course, he was going to be 101 years old on January 28th. I wish he had made it to his 101th birthday, but hey, 100 is pretty dang fine. He worked repairing appliances and electronics for people until a week before he died, and he only took one medication - for cholesterol.
Snellville Target has most Christmas/seasonal items priced at 90% off. I bought rolls of wrapping paper for .29 cents, and boxed Christmas cards for .30 cents. It's all going fast, so if you are interested, don't waste any time getting over to Target to check it out. It's in the back left corner of the store.
If you got the $2.50 off Electrasol dishwasher tabs coupon in the Sunday paper, Target is also the place to buy that. Target has Electrasol/Finish on sale for $3.25, so after the coupon, your cost would be .75 cents (by way of comparison, Publix sells the same product for about $6)

First Snellville Baby of New Year 2009
"Benjamin Lee Watkins, whose middle name is the same as his father's, grandfather's and great-grandfather's, was the first to arrive in 2009 at Emory Eastside Medical Center in Snellville."
..."For the Watkins, Ben actually came a day later than he was due, just missing the deadline for a 2008 tax write-off.
But his mother Heather said she didn't mind the late arrival, although it did come after some last-minute complications.
"He wasn't progressing and midnight passed and we were sad," she said with a laugh, cradling her infant as his photo was taken. "(But) a January baby is good. He feels like a movie star now."
The 8-pound, 15-ounce boy joins sisters Hope, 11, and Isabella, 4."
