Snellville residents want to take Oberholtzer's vote away
Snellville residents: Limit mayor’s voting powerAtlanta Journal Constitution - GA, USA" To end the gridlock plaguing the Snellville City Council, residents say just take Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer’s vote away. ..."
Mayor Oberholtzer didn't attend but has said he won't give up his vote without a fight.
I have to admit I really get a kick out of these news articles that say "120 residents packed City Hall." 120 residents would have packed our former city hall location, but I don't know if I'd really use the word "packed" now.
Snellville has some 18,000 residents.
So, 17,880 residents did not pack city hall. 17,880 residents did not show up.
I would bet that 17,000 Snellville residents do not know or care who Jerry Oberholtzer is.
This is not meant to sound like an insult to Mayor O, it's just that I would be really surprised if people in Snellville are very aware of their local government.

Tonight's town hall meeting
The unofficial town hall meeting should be just wrapping up now (8:28 pm as I write).
I wonder how things went...just sitting here, humming to myself like Winnie the Pooh.
I haven't left the house today, thanks to the flu. I would like to say that if I didn't have the flu, I would have been there because I'm such a caring citizen, but I'm just not sure. I'm not one to go to crowded places, especially crowded places with staircases. ;-)
But if you were there, leave a little comment - let us all know how it went, or I'll have to depend on the Atlanta Journal Constitution or whatever I can find again!
I kind of doubt that it's even wrapped up now (8:33 pm, so you can see my typing speed, lol)...the meeting was supposed to wrap at 8:30 pm sharp, but you know how it is...there's always that one guy or lady who has to raise a finger and have just one more word or question to get in while everyone who just wants desperately to get home has either a pained expression or shoots imaginary daggers out their eyes toward the perpetrator.
Meetings are FUN!!!!

Snellville gridlock to be addressed
Senator Don Balfour's explanation of the Town Hall Meeting tonight at Snellville City Hall at 7:30 pm.
"I want to hear from those who live in the city about what, if anything, we should do to address the issue of gridlock and maybe bring an end to the recent incendiary media headlines."Read more at Gwinnett Daily Post
On Wednesday, February 18, 2009, the City of Snellville received notice from Senator Balfour's office of Senator Balfour's intent to introduce local legislation to amend Snellville's city charter. Filing the notice is a requirement of Georgia state law. The date on the notice was February 10, 2009.
So to a lot of people, it appears that Senator Balfour has already made up his mind about this issue. I emailed Senator Balfour to get his input, but I haven't received a response yet.
Snellville flu
If you've noticed a decrease in blog postings over the last few days, it's because I've had the flu.
I'll just give you the 'heads up' on this, in case it hasn't gotten to your house yet. I hope and pray it won't!
It's the very "classic" flu with high temperature, lack of appetite, body aches and pains, headache (even my hair roots hurt!) Be really careful of dehydration with this. I fainted because of that.
I tend to have a low body temperature, so even a 99 is high for me. My fever went up to about 103/104.
Now it's moving through the family but the good news is that it does seem to be fast moving.
I've regretted not getting the flu shot, and I've had people who are against the flu shot tell me I made the right decision. It wasn't really a "decision," it was more that I never got around to it. But if I had hurt myself terribly from fainting, how would that have been the right decision? Next year, I'm getting the flu shot.

Tornado Warnings Snellville
Tornado Warnings Issued For Forsyth, Fulton, Cherokee, Carroll ...
ATLANTA -- Tornado warnings were issued Wednesday afternoon for Forsyth, Fulton, Carroll and Cherokee counties until 5:30 pm, according to WSB-TV Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns. Wednesday, February 18, 2009.
This was certainly scary. My daughter and I heard strange noises, we looked at each other and then my daughter looked up weather.com and we saw there was a tornado warning for Snellville. We scrambled everyone into the bathroom (it's the best place we have, unfortunately). Then the hail hit, and it was really scary. I was more scared this time than other times in the past. The really hard part is not letting myself look scared in front of kids.
Tornado watches and warnings will continue through this evening, so keep an eye on the TV or radio news tonight.
Here is the Snellville portion of Channel 2's rundown of events:
6:04 p.m.: Snellville getting large hail.
6:02 p.m.: Tornado reported by NWS near Mountain Park. Centerville, Snellville in path of storm.
6:00 p.m.: Tornado Warning issued for Walton County and southeastern Gwinnett until 6:45
Just shaking my head
I wonder if Rick Badie (columnist/blogger for the Atlanta Journal Constitution) ever wonders why he bothers?

One person refers to Snellville as Snellfrica, another person doesn't know decedence from decadence.
They should give people an IQ test before they allow them to post there.

As seen in Dave Barry's blog. Read all the comments people left there. Poem by a blogger identified as Not Dr Seuss.
Yes, that's right. This ridiculous situation has gone NATIONAL.Darn good poem though!
In Snellville there lived a good mayor they say
Who mayored all night and then mayored all day
His name, Oberholtzer, was known far and wide
For he equally mayored indoors and outside.
In Snellville was also a councilman bold
Named Jenkins, who counseled quite well, it's been told.
He could counsel a council on hills and on roads.
Then, alas, one day both men did need the commode.
Such a brouhaha brewed as was ne'er before seen!
And a hullabaloo! Things were getting quite mean!
The mayor and councilman had history
Which made Oberholtzer reluctant to pee
See, Jenkins was scary and quite fond of suing
Which made Oberholtzer uneasy in pooing.
Oberholtzer decided to ask for a guard
And suggested to Jenkins, "Use the loo in your yard!"
Police Chief Roy Whitehead does what he can do
So in Snellville, they have to take turns in the loo!
Oberholtzer wants a witness with him
I'm just shaking my head, and all that comes to mind to say is GROW UP!

The press is keeping this going. They love it. It gets readers/viewers.
Robert Jenkins and Mayor Oberholtzer need to sit down with each other and pledge to keep their mouths SHUT to the press.
In the long run the most important thing is the long term success of our city, and you are making Snellville look bad.

The Public Works Department will be conducting curb clean out in the following subdivisions during the month of February:

Trash Tribulations
Citizens to trash panel: Let us chooseIt seems to me that there needs to be some "middle of the road" decision made. Nobody's going to be 100% happy, so meet in the middle.
Gwinnett Daily Post - Griffin,GA,USA
By Jamie Ward, SNELLVILLE - An interested and concerned citizenry filled Snellville City Hall's community room Thursday night to offer input and suggestions ...
Many different trains of thought emerged from the one-hour session, from putting the issue on a ballot to allow the voters to decide, to restricting only two or three haulers to service a particular zone or zip code
A final theme that seemed to be of concern to a few was the number of trash trucks that go through subdivisions. One woman of the Dogwood Plantations subdivision said 12 trucks sometimes came through on a given day while Bob Lumpkin of Dacula said 11 trucks would travel through his subdivision and it only consisted of one street.
The next meeting to discuss the ongoing trash debacle will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at George Pierce Community Center in Suwanee. The park is located at 55 Buford Highway.
I'd suggest letting trash companies submit bids - not just bids that are about pricing, but bids that are about service, safety, and the level of upkeep of the companies' vehicles.
Because I can tell you, it's not all about "price." I have Robertson picking up now in my neighborhood, but when I had a choice, I paid a little more for BFI trash pick up, because they seemed more professional and their vehicles weren't billowing out pollution.
So I'd say, narrow the companies down to 3, then let citizens choose which of those 3 they prefer. Some neighborhoods would still have 3 trucks rumbling through, but that's much better than having 11 or 12.
It's bad for our air quality and bad for our streets to have so many heavy vehicles going through a neighborhood.
Our residential streets are not built to support heavy trucks, so to have too many trucks going on our streets, the taxpayer will pay increased road repair expenses in the end.
Again I say it's not about low prices. I will gladly pay more for any service provider who follows all laws, has well-kept vehicles, and does background checks so we can feel safer in our neighborhoods.
Well, that's just my opinion. What's yours? Leave a comment.

Home Business Tax
I'm just back from paying for my 2009 Home Occupation Tax License. Yes, you have to have a license if you want to do a little home businesses.
I do portrait art, but even if you sell AVON or Pampered Chef, you need to have a Home Occupation Tax License. I pay $45 a year. The amount you pay depends on how much business you do (the total of your Gross Receipts).
The minimum tax is $40 a year, and the maximum tax is $30,000.
It's not just a tax payment, however. You must promise to abide by laws concerning a business in your home. The laws cover the entrance to your place of business to the number of cars that will frequent your home business. This is so your neighbors won't be bothered.
For more information, see this page of Snellville.org
Next year, I'll definitely mail it in. The city clerk's office is at the top of the staircase in Snellville City Hall. Am I the only one around here with a problem with heights? I hate that staircase. Love how it looks though.

Blog of Easy Recipes
I am cooking more at home than ever. Maybe you are too.
I have a blog of easy recipes that might interest you.
Visit QuickNEasyRecipes.Blogspot.com
Probably the easiest way to use the recipe blog is to take a look in your fridge and see what you have, then look on the list of ingredient links on the site. When you click on an ingredient, you will see all the recipes that I have listed that use that food.
You (hopefully) will have most of the ingredients on hand, because most of the recipes are pretty simple, with very few ingredients.
Seriously, when I got married almost 24 years ago, I could barely boil water. Now I can boil water with some noodles in it, so you can see how much I have improved.
