Snellville Recycling Center
Today I visited the Snellville Recycling Center for the first time since I moved here 15+ years ago. I looked at it from afar, but I never went in before. I've been doing some spring cleaning so I took a bunch of cardboard boxes, and some old appliances like a coffeemaker & an old vacuum cleaner over there.
I knew it that it had a lot of upgrades, but I was really pleased! If you haven't been using the Recycling Center, you should take a load of recyclables over there to check it out for yourself.

It will save you a lot of time and effort to read over that page first, so you won't load up stuff that they won't accept. It will also help you know how to organize your stuff so it's quicker to sort at the Recycling Center.
Each type of accepted recyclable material has its own bay. The Recycling Center is for use by Snellville residents only, so make sure you have some ID to show you are a resident. It's very organized there, and they will help you make sure everything gets put in the right place.
If you are paying for the larger trash bin/home trash pickup beyond the pickup that is covered in your Snellville City Taxes (I was), then you might want to consider doing more recycling. The more you can keep out of your regular residential trash pickup, then you could use a smaller home refuse container and not have to pay the extra trash pickup charges. I have been paying about $26 quarterly. So by having less trash and using the Recycling Center (free), I'll save $104 per year.
I had already been doing the basic recycling in the bin that they pick up from my curb, but it's nice to know that more than that can be taken to the Recycling Center.
Using the Recycling Center is very convenient. It's located on Marigold St., which is right behind Briscoe Park. You can get to it through the park, or you can enter Marigold Street from Lenora Church Road (the street right by the Elizabeth Williams Library Branch).

What's going in the old Linens and Things location?
I've had several people ask me by email and Twitter, if I know what will be going into the spot left vacant when Linens and Things closed.
Something is going on in there, but nobody can tell exactly what.
The rumor mill had it that the Oasis Church was going to fill that spot. The Oasis Church started with 8 people attending the first services just a few years ago, and now they have 1,800 on Sunday attendance records!
A friend of mine does some work for the Oasis Church, and she tells me there's no truth to that rumor.
"I had not heard the Linens and Things rumor - we are pretty active, and i am pretty connected ........ so i would have thought i would have heard that! could be, tho - funny how things start going around. we are looking for permanent space, and as the vision is to service snellville, lawrenceville and grayson, around that 124/78 intersection, or within just a couple miles of it, is the area of highest interest."It's a fun rumor though. The congregation of Oasis Church currently meets in the theater of South Gwinnett High School.

New London Theatre will present the premier performance of “Grimms Fairy Tales” opening March 20th and continuing through April 5th.
“Grimm's Fairy Tales” is the story of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, fifteen and thirteen years old. They must face Napoleon's wolf-soldiers and a scheming fox, but with help from the comedic Bremen musicians, succeed in being reunited with their family in this coming-of-age original fairy tale.
“Grimm's Fairy Tales” is being produced by Kathleen Mardis and directed by Kirk Buis, who is also the playwright.
"Grimm's Fairy Tales " will be performed on the following dates and times:

Don't MESS with Snellville
I was at the Snellville post office today. I counted 17 pieces of trash, and that was just on the left side of the front of the building.
I know that the mowing and clean up around the building is done by post office employees, because I've seen people who work there mowing the grass while wearing their uniforms.
I'm not blaming the post office employees for the trash. They were having a busy day today. I really don't think they should be expected to get trash cleaned up when they have a lot of people in line.
I think that people need to stop dropping their trash, expecting someone else to clean it up!
There are trash cans inside the post office! Take 5 steps and throw your own trash away!

In search of the toilet planter
Yesterday, I drove up and down Street Deville in Snellville, in search of the famous toilet-turned-into-a-planter owned by Snellville City Council Member, Robert Jenkins. Before you think I'm some kind of (bigger) freak, I just happened to be in the area, I didn't drive out initially with the intent to search for it.
But, although I drove down the street twice, I did not see the toilet or the planter...whatever you want to call it.
It can't be terribly offending if you don't notice it while driving down the street and actually looking for it.
I've seen a photo of it, but I had my own camera with me and thought I'd snap a shot of it myself.
Oh well.

2 teenagers hospitalized in Snellville crash
Both are age 16. The crash happened near Grayson Parkway.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The driver was sent to Grady Hospital's trauma unit, the passenger was sent to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. Both are expected to survive their injuries.

Higher fines for extreme speeders
This is really interesting. It's an increase in speeding fines for people who excessively speed or are habitual violators. The money from ticketing people who are extreme speeders will go to fund hospital trauma centers and to start or improve trauma emergency room services in rural areas.
Seems fitting to me, because these are the people who cause a lot of traumatic accidents.

Call me to paint the potty planter
I got a good laugh out of this. Hey, why not use it? Why put this toilet in the landfill? It can be spruced up even more with some paint. You can get paint for ceramics at Hobby Lobby or Joann Etc. Maybe Robert Jenkins can become the Howard Finster of Snellville. This would really bring in tourism. If Mr. Jenkins doesn't want to paint it, I volunteer to paint it. Maybe we can get it designated as a historical marker.

Raffle to sell home is illegal commercial gambling
We hear on the news all the time about somebody who sold raffle tickets to sell their house. Well, in Georgia, it's considered commercial gambling to do that, so it's illegal. Only churches, non-profits, and some other organizations can have raffles.
Joseph Imafidon of Lawrenceville is out on $11,000 bond because he set up a website to sell his home by a raffle. It's so sad, because he probably had no idea he was doing anything wrong. But not knowing the law is no excuse, unfortunately. I hope that if they find he was ignorant of the law, that at least the judge will be lenient. I can see myself, and many people I know, making this same mistake.

Snellville snowman sez howdy
Here's our snowman. He took very little time to make. My years of experience building snowmen in Sterling Heights, Michigan came in handy. Our snowman is sporting a "Savannah GA" hat and mismatched girls' gloves. His eyes are 2% milk caps and his nose is a Coca-Cola cap.
This morning, he's still standing, but he's sort of leaning back now. Someone down the street has an old sofa out for the trash (it's covered in snow) and I'd love to take our snowman down there and sit him in the sofa with a TV Guide in his lap and a cigarette in his branch hand. LOL!

Gwinnett County Schools CLOSED
Gwinnett County Schools will be closed today, according to the WSB Closings list.
I used the last bit of coarse salt that I had on the porch and driveway. I had trouble walking back up the driveway. It's icy, and if you know Gwinnett County Schools, they don't close unless things are really bad. I thought I was doing so well, buying that box of coarse salt back when the weather was warm. But I should have bought 5 or 6 boxes. (Oh durnit, when you need it, you can't get out to the store to get it)
Do Snellville Police and emergency services (and yourself) a favor...stay home and off the roads today!

Look out yon winders at the snow
Well y'all better look out yer wind-ers and watch the snow! (For those not familiar, 'wind-ers' is how the word 'window' is sometimes said down here!) The first time I heard 'winder' for 'window' was in Savannah Georgia where a minister encouraged everyone to be inspired by the "stained glass wind-ers." I had no idear people talked like that.
I have been amazed at the size of the snowflakes, and that they have been falling for so many hours today. The kids have already been out in it for about 5 minutes. It's very wet so it's hard to stay out there very long.
It is very pretty. The temperature is going to get down to about 25 degrees overnight. I'm hoping there will be a little wind to dry up the roads, or we could be in for bad ice in the morning. Of course, the kids are hoping they won't have school tomorrow.
Officials from Gwinnett County Schools get out around 5 am and drive around to check conditions. They usually find that conditions are okay, much to my children's disgust. The kids wish the officials would just look out the window and decide they don't want to go out in that mess! But that never happens.
