Kindergarten registration Gwinnett County GA

Kindergarten Registration for Gwinnett County Schools is May 7, 2009.

To register for the 2009-10 school year, your child will need to be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2009. Call your school for registration times. For a list of phone numbers, visit GCPS' website, www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us and look for "Countdown to Kindergarten."

Registration will occur at local schools. If you're not sure what school your child will attend, call the Planning Department at 678-301-7085. The first day of school will be August 10, 2009.
Go to your local school during registration hours.

Registration will be delayed if you fail to bring needed information and are unable to fill out the paperwork:

  • You can bring your child (I didn't take my son last year, and that's okay - but sometimes they do some hearing/sight screenings, so it's a good idea. I'd just say, for the best experience, make sure your child is well rested and has eaten before you attend)
  • Bring a copy of the Pre-K progress report, if your child attended PreK. It will help your child's new teacher know more about your child's needs.
  • Bring an official document that proves your child's birthdate for eligibility. Examples: original birth certificate or birth registration, an official state or federal form with date of birth on it, or a passport.
  • Proof that you live in the area covered by that school. Examples: A non-contingent sales contract, lease, or deed. You'll need at least one utility bill (but not a phone bill) that has the same address as that on your contract, lease, or deed.
  • You'll need proof that the child had vision, hearing, and dental exams in the past year. You'll need Georgia Form #3300. The form will be provided by your physician or the health department. If you're coming from out of state, a letter from your healthcare professionals are usually acceptable.
  • Photo ID of the adult enrolling the student. This can be a driver's license, a state ID card, a passport, or other official photo identification.
  • Proof of custody/guardianship. To learn more about proof of custody, contact Gwinnett County Probate Court at 770-822-8265.
  • Georgia Certificate of Immunization. State form # 3231
  • The child's Social Security number. If you don't want to provide this number, parents may sign a waiver.
For more information, contact Gwinnett County Public Schools, www.gwinnett.k12.ga.us

Gwinnett Daily Post - Griffin,GA,USA

Unfortunately, unity is a word that no longer describes the Evermore CID that runs along U.S. Highway 78 through Snellville. Disputes and bickering among its leaders have escalated into recall elections and lawsuits. The betterment of the community has taken a back seat to stubborn power plays from which no one appears willing to back down.

How to get rid of old furniture in Snellville

My neighbor's had a couch at the curb for several weeks - in this case, since before we had snow here. I even mentioned it in this March 3rd blog post.

If you need to use a string trimmer to cut the grass that's grown up around the furniture in your yard, then it might be time to figure out how to get rid of it.

There are a couple ways to get rid of old furniture in Snellville:

  1. Take it to the Snellville Recycling Center. Located at the back of Briscoe Park, you can take old furniture there and drop it off. Free for Snellville residents.
  2. Tie or pin a couple of the Snellville blue trash bags to the piece of furniture. You can buy the blue bags at Publix grocery store in Snellville. A box of the bags is about $25 (I haven't bought them in awhile so I'm not 100% certain of that price), but it's about that. You will only need about 2 of them for a loveseat. The trash company will pick it up on the next trash day.
Another option open to everyone (but before furniture is destroyed by being left outside) is to go to www.Freecycle.org and locate a local group. You can post items that you'd like to give away. Someone else might be glad to have your old sofa.

Enter for chance to win MySnellvilleBlog car magnet

Huzzah, it's a giveaway on this blog. Yes, I am giving something away free.

This is an 8"x10" sized magnet for your vehicle. Can you imagine the admiring glances that will come your way when you sport the US flag AND the web address of MySnellvilleBlog.com ?!? I know, right?!? The mind just boggles.

This is the only one in existence (right now). You don't have to put it on your car, but I'd love it if you did. It is small enough to fit on your refrigerator, yet large enough to dominate all the dinky little advertising magnets you've already got on there.

To have a chance to win the magnet, just post a comment here. I'd love to know how you plan to use the magnet too!

If you post about this on your blog, let me know in an additional blog comment and you get an extra entry.

If you post about this blog giveaway on Twitter, let me know in an additional blog comment to get an additional entry.

I approve all the comments before they post to this blog, so don't be worried if you don't see your comment post right away. There's no need to re-post your comment.

Enter now through April 24, 2009. One entry per person, except for additional entries gained by posting to your own blog or to Twitter.

BE SURE to leave your email address so I can contact you if you win!
USA Addresses only.

I'll use a random picker thingie like random.org to pick the winner. The winner will have 2 days to get back to me with their mailing information. If I don't hear back within 2 days, then I will pick another winner at random.

PS: I'm not responsible if the magnet scratches your vehicle. I've personally never had that problem with these kinds of magnets, but just in case, I've forewarned you, and that should save us all a lot of legal hassle. I'm also not responsible if you decide to slide your credit and debit cards across the magnetic surface. Please note, doing that will erase your magnetic data on cards. I'm also not responsible if you put video cassettes too close to this magnet and it deletes your collection of ABC's Full House sitcoms. I'm not responsible for doing you a favor. Now that that's all out of the way, enjoy the chance to win a free magnet. I need a nap now.

It's tax time

A hauntingly accurate parody of local news on tax deadline day.

This is sure to offend somebody

In Snellville we do not have a separation of church and state. Technically we are supposed to, but if you look around, you might wonder.

An example of this is at Briscoe Park. Check out the playground equipment that features the Bible story of Noah's Ark.

I love the story of Noah's Ark - but if a religion I didn't agree with was the dominant one here, would I want to see their holy book stories on playground equipment I helped pay for with my taxes?

Not likely.

But maybe heathens who don't believe exactly the same way I do should stay away from the park. (kidding!)

And while we discuss this, the kids just think it's cute pictures of animals on their playground equipment. Makes you want to be a kid again, doesn't it?

Snellville liquor law adjustments

Gwinnett Daily Post - Griffin,GA,USA
SNELLVILLE - Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer and City Council members voted Monday to make two changes to Snellville's alcoholic beverage ...

The first change allows for beer and wine package stores to host wine tastings. The second change allows bowling alleys to sell distilled spirits to patrons.
It's a teensy weensy, itsy bitsy liquor law change or two, but for some, it's a slippery slope into complete degradation of Snellville for adults to drink in bowling alleys.

I've always thought of most bowling alleys as dark places full of drunk guys anyway. Must be why I like them ;-)

But the good news is that the bowling alley in Snellville is practically across the street from Eastside Medical Center, so that should save loads of time.
Larry Rutledge, a deacon at First Baptist Church of Snellville, implored council members to think twice before approving the amendment.

"Alcohol is the most destructive substance in the country. Stand up and be Christian about this," he said.
Personally, I would say that heroin is the most destructive substance in this country.
"I understand the pain that alcohol can cause," said [Snellville City Council Member Tod] Warner, who said he lost a cousin to a drunk driver. "The alcohol did not kill my cousin; the person did. It's not the government's place to tell us not to drink alcohol."
Yeah, you would think that people had parents who would've told them that.

Snellville Public Works Department needs your help

Spring time is here and it’s time to do those outdoor chores. Please help keep our stormwater system clean by keeping lawn clippings and landscape debris out of streets, drainage culverts and drainage easements.

Dumping grass clippings in creeks and drainage swales quickly restricts the natural flow and can
cause upstream and downstream effects to other properties. The City of Snellville appreciates your cooperation on keeping our stormwater system clean!

Gwinnett County Schools finalist in Broad Prize for Urban Education excellence

Yesterday, the Broad Foundation announced that Gwinnett County Public Schools is one of five finalists for the 2009 Broad Prize for Urban Education, the largest education award in the country.

The Broad (rhymes with “road”) Prize for Urban Education is an annual $2 million award that honors the urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps among ethnic groups and between low- and non-low-income students.

Eli Broad, founder of the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, said,

"These five districts are among the most impressive in the country because they have demonstrated an unwavering focus on student achievement above all else. They stand as a beacon for other urban districts facing similar challenges and are exemplars of practices that can be replicated elsewhere across the country to improve our public schools."
Alvin Wilbanks, Superintendent of Gwinnett County Schools said,
"I want to personally congratulate all of our employees on this achievement. This is a prestigious validation of the good work that we all know is going on in Gwinnett classrooms every day. Being a finalist for the Broad Prize is a significant accomplishment in which all employees played a part and of which we all can be proud. The Board of Education joins me in congratulating you and thanking you for all that you do for the children of Gwinnett County Public Schools. "

Police dog to undergo breed change operation to become a cat

A Snellville Police dog will be the first ever known to undergo a BCO (Breed Change Operation).

The K-9 cop, known as "Rusty," has always felt like a cat trapped inside a dog's body.

Although the breed change operation will incur costs up to 2 million dollars, Snellville residents don't mind an increase in their taxes if it helps a K-9 officer feel better about himself.

"I really like cats better than dogs anyway," said longtime resident of Snellville Edna LoWattage.

When we informed Mrs. LoWattage that her property tax will increase from $1,072 to $130,000 per year, she said that she will just work harder selling AVON. She plans to concentrate on a goal of selling 130,000 AVON lip balms to offset the increased taxes.

The police department says that Rusty's talent in his new feline status will be his ability to slink into small areas, but a problem they will need to watch for is post-operative catnip addiction.
