Lilburn family escapes house fire caused by chimney

A reminder to make sure you have your fireplace checked each year before you use it!

A Lilburn family escaped a house fire that was caused by their chimney catching fire and the fire spreading to the roof. At one point, flames were shooting up 15 feet. This type of fire caused by the build up inside a fireplace or a defect/crack in the chimney is not uncommon. It's happened to a friend of mine.

If you need a recommendation for someone to examine and clean your fireplace, I've used L.M. Richardson. I found him on Kudzu.com and have hired him twice, once for the fireplace and another time to clean out some duct work. Richardson can be reached at 404-289-1695 or visit his website, AnHonestChimneySweep.com. This is not an ad for him, although he deserves one. I would hire him again.

Homeowner Eric Kind told Channel 2 Action News reporter Ashley Hayes he built a fire in the fireplace because of the cool weather Tuesday night."It being the first cool night of the fall, I thought it might be nice to have a very small fire," said Kind. "I did have a very small, very small, contained fire with just a few logs."Later he thought the fire was out, but smelled smoke in the house.

...The fire was burning in the attic space through the roof at the chimney area, the chimney was also on fire on the outside of the house," said Capt. Tommy Rutledge. "It was a very serious fire when we arrived on the scene."

Save Snellville Library group formed

On September 22, 2009 the Gwinnett County Library Board voted to transform the Snellville Library from a full service library to a computer lab only open 35 hours a week. No books will be kept on site at the new computer lab. The Save Snellville's Library Citizens Committee is a group of concerned citizens and business leaders in the community who do not believe that a mere computer lab meets the library needs of the Snellville Area. They are asking for your help in Saving the Snellville Library for our community.

From the new website: SaveSnellvilleLibrary.com
Facebook page for group
According to WHOIS registration, the domain name for the Save Snellville Library group was secured by Snellville City Council member, Kelly Kautz.

"....the group’s executive committee says if it fails to salvage the full-service facility on Lenora Church Road, the group might petition the city to take back the property and building, which was deeded to the county on the condition it be used as a library.

...Kautz, also a Snellville councilwoman, said the group already is researching the cost if the city were to run its own library.

...Snellville Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer, who calls the citizen-led group a “political mess,” said the city should take a wait-and-see posture on the computer lab.

Gas leak closes Snellville Main St/US78

This is really getting ridiculous. See list of all the times (links at end of this post) - I've posted about gas line breaks and leaks in the same area. I'm not an expert, but it seems like some kind of change is needed. Maybe the gas lines need to be marked differently, the construction crews need more training, or both.

  • Crews found a strong odor of natural gas and an active leak on arrival.
  • West Main Street was closed between Henry Clower Blvd and McGee Rd. Officials said they expect it to reopen by 10:30 am.
  • 15 area businesses were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
  • Power was cut to the immediate area by Walton EMC, to eliminate any potential for an ignition source.
  • The leak was caused by a contracting crew digging near the roadway

Snellville City Council delays Sunday liquor issue

One newspaper says it's been put off until January, another article says possibly March. The referendum would be to decide whether to put Sunday liquor sales up for a vote by citizens, the referendum won't be the actual vote on the issue -

"...the council tabled the vote on a referendum, until at least January. The move came after Councilwoman Kelly Kautz, citing Georgia law, said residents weren’t being given the proper 40 days notice before the November referendum.

More than 120 residents had packed council chambers for a public hearing on the issue."

Snellville delays Sunday liquor decision
Atlanta Journal Constitution - Atlanta,GA,USA
"Citing state law, Kautz stated that council members would have to wait 10 days from Monday to issue a call for election, and an election could be held no sooner than 30 days after the call was issued. Under those terms, a Nov. 3 election would be too soon."

Snellville citizen input needed

An email from Barbara Bender:

On Monday night, the Snellville City Council will vote on whether to put a referendum on the ballot in November for Sunday sales of liquor by the drink. This referendum will allow the citizens of Snellville to vote on this issue. Please note that this is NOT a vote by any Councilmember for or against Sunday sales. It IS a vote to allow the citizens of Snellville to decide whether to allow Sunday sales.

If you, the voter, would like the opportunity to vote on this issue in November, I urge you to email the Councilmembers to vote for the referendum on Monday night.

The email addresses are as follows:

joberholzter[AT]snellville.org (MySnellvilleBlog says: "email address bounced")
Please act as soon as possible. If you would like to attend the meeting and voice your opinion, the meeting is this Monday, Sept 28th at 7:30 pm.
Regards,

Blog break

Almost every fall, I need to "check out" of here so I can get other work done (busy time of year in my home business).

That time has come again. I will miss posting to this blog and doing my other writing, but I'm not a professional reporter (obviously) and I cannot spend the time needed to do in-depth research for reporting. I'm just a mom who thought one day in 2005 that it would be fun to have a blog about Snellville stuff.

I feel torn between wanting to do a service here, but my family needing me and my home business needing me a lot this time of year. I'll miss sharing fun events and information with you all.

So, I will say adios for now, and see you in 2010!

I will break in here if I hear about something very big, like closings due to flu outbreak, arrests or breaks in the murder investigations of Eva Kay Wenal and Heather Strube, or the missing person case of Justin Gaines. I also haven't forgotten the brutal murder of Beulah Gotwalt in her Snellville home. Crime news will be updated from time to time on SnellvilleConfidential.com.

A final note: Please try to do as much business as you can in Snellville, to help our local businesses stay in business! I have a blog about restaurants/dining experiences in Snellville and also one about shopping in Snellville. Also check out www.WomenOfGwinnett.com - there are links on the side to local women's businesses. Using these resources, you're sure to find great restaurants and people to do business with in Snellville and Gwinnett.

My letter to the Gwinnett Library Board

Dear Library Board members:

Thank you for your service to Gwinnett County.

I would like to plead the case for the Snellville library branch to stay open. Because of its close proximity to T.W. Briscoe Park, the library has great potential to increase the literacy of citizens who might visit the park, but would never make a direct trip to a public library. Once inside, they might get interested in books like they never have before. The more we can get families into libraries, the better educated and literate our citizens will be, and that HAS to mean a better, safer local society.

We realize there are some other branches that people in Snellville could drive to, but there are many people near the Snellville branch would would not have access to the Centerville and Grayson branches if the Snellville branch closes.

I know that I could get Snellville citizens willing to donate their time to shelve books, and do whatever else they can do to help to keep our library open. I have blogged about the library at this link: http://mysnellvilleblog.blogspot.com/2009/09/snellville-library-branch-set-to-close.html and you can see comments from citizens regarding how the library closure will impact their lives.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

Zoar United Methodist Church to celebrate 198 years

Zoar United Methodist Church in Snellville will celebrate 198 years in service to the Lord.

From Gwinnett Daily Post:

Historic church to celebrate 198 years

SNELLVILLE - When Zoar United Methodist Church opened its doors almost 200 years ago, some of its parishioners were older than this nation.

On Sunday, the Snellville church will celebrate 198 years of ministry.

"The history of our church stretches back to a time of people who lived through the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf War and the present conflicts," said Pastor Kelly Brisendine. "What a blessing it has been for us to have God's house as a place of worship through these and many other difficult times."

Zoar will celebrate its 198th anniversary during an 11 a.m. service Sunday, with a covered-dish lunch to follow.

"It will be a birthday celebration not to be missed," Brisendine said.

Zoar United Methodist Church is at 3895 Zoar Church Road in Snellville. For more information on the church's worship services and other programs, call 770-972-5905 or visit www.zoarumc.org.

Snellville Library branch might close

CORRECTION: Nothing has been determined until the Library Board meeting that will take place on Tuesday, September 22nd.

Sad news - the Elizabeth Williams (Snellville) library branch and the Buford library branch could close on February 27, 2010, according to documents obtained by Chad Parson, President of the Dacula Business Association and shared with MySnellvilleBlog.com.

Parson says that the information was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request to the Gwinnett County Library System.

"We want everyone to know that we are trying to find a way to save ALL Gwinnett libraries, not just Dacula. The Library Board vote is Tuesday night & we need Snellville & Buford residents to know that if we lose... they are next."
If you'd like more information on the movement to save Gwinnett's libraries, see www.savedaculalibrary.com. Chad Parson can be contacted at dcparson[at]gmail.com

It seems to me (MySnellvilleBlog blogger), that the Snellville (SNE) library branch is too small already for the population in Snellville. I think the next closest (or convenient) branch for us would be the Grayson Branch, located at 700 Grayson Parkway. It is a lovely branch, but it's not "our" Snellville branch, so this is sad to me. Nobody from Snellville could walk to that branch within a reasonable amount of time, and riding a bicycle there would be hazardous. We could also use the Centerville branch.

It's so natural to be sad and mad about this, and take it personally. After all, I've been taking my children there since they were toddlers.

A handwritten internal note in the document asks,
"Can we feasibly close BUF & SNE [Buford & Suwanee] at the same time & set up 2 computer labs within 2 weeks of each other?! A lot to do but great if we can!"
I would hope that they are pained in closing any of the branches. When you only have so much money, it has to be stretched somehow. I think it's great that people feel moved to fight for their library branch. I really love the Elizabeth Williams branch and hope something can and will be done, however, hard decisions sometimes have to be made. It's a grieving process, and I'll probably just have to accept it.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, dated July 13, 2009:

“We just don’t have enough revenue to support everything we’ve built,” said Mike Comer, deputy county administrator. “We certainly regret the measures we’re taking.”

Comer said the county does not advise the library which buildings it should staff, but operational budgets are being strained because of the 2009 cuts.

“We don’t tell the library what they can open and not open,” he said. “I understand the cuts will present a severe problem for them.”

Michelle Long, spokeswoman for the library system, said opening for the $7.4 million Hamilton Mill Library has been delayed but she not speculate for how long. The county had planned to have the facility running this winter.

I wonder if we, the citizens of Snellville, organized as a community, we could staff the library ourselves? If we could, would be willing to, to save our library? Or would we rather just drive out to Grayson?

Please don't text and drive

I don't think any kind of cellphone use while driving is acceptable. Just pull over somewhere and talk. But texting is even worse! I've counted people driving eastward through the US78/Wisteria/Skyland Drive intersection, and usually, out of 10 drivers, about 7 are talking on their cellphone.

A couple days ago, a young driver was behind me at the light, talking on her cellphone and eating. All I could do is pray, "Please Lord, let her pay attention when the light turns green!" I can be a defensive driver in most situations, but when they're behind you, sometimes there isn't a thing you can do. I'm glad to be older and have good insurance though!

It's interesting that when surveyed, most people think its okay for them to use a cell phone while driving, because they think they are so good they can do both...but the same people don't want other people to use cell phone and drive.

So here's a guy from Snellville who totaled his car because he was texting. He's lucky he didn't total himself or take someone's life. He's sorry he hit a car that had the engine in the back, so by tail ending the other driver, it caused $25,000 damage. But someone's life is worth more than $25K, it's priceless.

That's a very expensive text message, but the lesson is invaluable.

What do you think should be done about texting and driving? Should it be left up to the driver, or should we have laws about it? Some people think the law wouldn't do any good in deterring people from this behavior, it would be an after-the-fact punishment. What do you think?

House paint color ordinance

Do you have a neighbor with a purple house?

Well, you might be surprised that Snellville has an ordinance about exterior home paint colors. Also good to note in case you consider repainting your own house.

You can see the palette here: Exterior Color Palette (pdf), found under Zoning Ordinances in the Official City of Snellville website, www.Snellville.org.

The colors shown on the color palette list are of a certain brand, but equivalent colors are allowed.

Some people pay an association fee to be sure neighbors don't paint in garish colors. In Snellville, it's just another benefit of living here.

I remember seeing the first tower on fire while watching the news reports, and then my horror when I saw the second tower get hit, on live TV. It hit me that there was no way this was an accident. As the realization sunk in, I said to myself, " this is like my generation's Pearl Harbor."

It's NOT Snellville vs Suwanee

Brenda, a contributor over at Talk Gwinnett mentioned Suwanee's Town Center and wrote,

"Snellville City Council Elections are coming up in November. There are those currently on the city council who have actively surpressed development of Snellville's Town Center, which is currenlty [sic] a cleared lot on Wisteria Dr. at Clower St. between the funeral home and the closed Ryan's.

Every Snellville voter should visit the Suwanee Town Center Park and then ask themselves, "Why not in Snellville?".
As far as I've heard, no member of the Snellville City Council has had a problem with the development on Wisteria. Perhaps the lack of development, but not with the development. The development is also called Wisteria Square.

The reason we have the "bridge to nowhere" in that large lot, and a parking lot set up for nothing, is that the developer hasn't been able to get investors yet. It's been well-documented that Doug Spohn has said he hasn't been able to move ahead because of investment issues, and we all know what has happened with the banking industry.

Here is Susan Gast's AJC article 'What's with the bridge in the field? ' dated December 13, 2007. Here is an entry from Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer's blog regarding the development, dated October 24, 2007: 'Wisteria Square on Hold, AJC Reports.'

Excerpt:
City Manager Jim Brooks checked in with developer Doug Spohn on Tuesday to find out what is happening with the property.

“He is still interested,” said Brooks. “He wants to have a certain percentage of it pre-sold prior to coming out of the ground.”
The Snellville Police Department will build a
state-0f-the-art public safety campus
right across the street, and I'm confident that once the police facility gets underway, the developer of Wisteria Square, a work and play development won't have any problem getting takers.

We're all sick of looking at that bare field, but let's put blame where blame belongs...or better yet, not play the blame game at all.

Snellville "CAN-Do" Hunger Initiative

SNELLVILLE, GA – At the “B at the Movies” event held at T.W. Briscoe Park on August 29th, the City of Snellville collected canned goods as part of the “Can Do for Hunger” initiative sponsored by the Gwinnett Municipal Association (GwMA).

GwMA consists of 14 member cities in Gwinnett County and is committed to fostering better cooperation among the cities of Gwinnett. Attendees of the Snellville movie event contributed 105 various food items for the initiative. These items were then donated to the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry located off Highway 78 East behind Community of Grace Church.

The Southeast Gwinnett Co-op serves people who reside in 30078, 30039, 30017, and Gwinnett 30052 zip codes.

Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer had the opportunity to deliver the food and receive a tour of the Co-op’s facility from the director, Laura Drake. “They have a nice set-up here,” remarked Mayor Oberholtzer. “This is really great.”

At my child's elementary school, the decision to allow children to view the video will be left up to the parents. If parents don't want their child to see it, they just need to let the school know, and they will have the students spend time in another room.

Gwinnett County Schools on H1N1 flu

I contacted Gwinnett County Schools to find out how many confirmed cases of H1N1/Swine Flu that the schools have had. I specifically asked about Britt Elementary here in Snellville, but I received a response from Jorge Quintana, Director of Media Relations for Gwinnett County Schools:

Friday, September 4, 2009:

"At this time, the school system has not received any notifications from the health department with confirmed cases of H1N1.

Some parents, however, have notified our schools about children experiencing flu-like symptoms and suspected cases. All Gwinnett schools, including Britt Elementary, are in constant touch with our parents informing them and keeping them updated with letters home about these suspected cases.

Parents shouldn't be surprised if they receive information about the flu as the school district is working very closely with the health department spreading the word about what their children and families can do at home to prevent getting sick.

Health experts have predicted that this will be a very busy flu season so we certainly want to do our part with communication between the school and home."

So, they don't have confirmed cases reported by the health department to the school system, but that doesn't mean that some of the flu symptoms the parents have reported were not H1N1.

Movement to changed proposed school name

I know the school system sends out an invitation for people to propose names for new schools, then the list of proposed names is shared. I know this, because I remember browsing the list. So there was time to either propose a name or suggest name changes quite some time ago. I also think if people want to get technical about who/what was there first, the school would need to be called Cherokee school, because they were really here first, right?

I guess all this mess is why in NYC they just number their schools. I've always thought that was really boring: P.S. 20, P.S. 9 and so on. But they don't have to worry about somebody getting their feelings hurt or protesting. In my opinion, that's a very bland way to live.

"Thomas Livsey, whose family has lived in the community south of Snellville for more than 100 years, said he is disappointed the school being built on Ga. Highway 124 near Lee Road has been named Snell Elementary.

Livsey said he thinks the school, which will open in August in the Shiloh cluster, should be named Anderson-Livsey Elementary, after two of the original families of the Promised Land Community, to honor the history of the area.

"If we don't do something about it, (the history) will die, just like we're going to die someday," Livsey said.

Although the school has a Snellville address, it is located in an unincorporated part of Gwinnett County familiarly known as the Promised Land. Named by an Irish immigrant who settled in the area in the early 1800s, black residents began purchasing the property following his death.

"Black people owned more land in this end of the county than in any other part of Gwinnett," Livsey said."

Property tax bills in the mail

Yeah, you're not glad to hear this news, I'm sure. But look at the bright side, if you get one of the bills, at least you have property to be taxed!

I like to hear Pa's voice saying, "The land, Scarlett, the land!" as I send my property tax payment in. That was a Gone With the Wind joke, hope you got that one.

Mayor Oberholtzer goes for a slide at Briscoe Park

Mayor Oberholtzer is braver than I am! I'd be afraid my heinie would get stuck in the slide.

Kids, don't try this at home.
Try it at Briscoe Park's new playground.
Here are some photos of the playground equipment

Lower your bills in Snellville

Here are some ideas that worked well for me in cutting back expenses:

Cancel land-line phone line, go with an Internet phone provider.

  • Benefit: Great money savings.
  • Downside: If you call 911 and can't tell the operator where you are, they won't be able to find you. Landline phones have satellite tracking of your location to the emergency operator, Internet and cell phones don't. Voicemail with AT&T/Bellsouth works even if the power's out - if you have a business, it's good to be able, once the power's back on, to connect with people who tried to reach you.
UPDATE: @mweavr recommends checking on VOIP & e911 services, and says that they can determine your location if you fill out the right info beforehand http://bit.ly/2u4Tgd

TIP: If you really like having a land-line phone but hate the high long-distance bills, then consider changing only your long distance service provider. You can do this, you can have the landline phone but have long distance service with someone else. I am very happy with Pioneer Telephone. You just need to make sure you dial a "1" before the area code when you call someone - that's how it switches over to your selected long distance provider.

Cancel inside wire protection service with AT & T

If you keep your land-line phone service, there's an optional charge on your bill each month for about $7. That's for inside wire coverage. Maybe you don't need that. Think carefully about if you do.
  • Benefit: $7 per month savings, which adds up to $84 over the course of a year.
  • Downside: AT & T takes care of damage to the phone wires from the outside of your house to the telephone pole, but inside your house is your responsibility unless you pay the $7 wire protection.
Call the companies you do business with and ask for a better rate

I called the pest control company I use and told them I just had to cut the budget somewhere, and unfortunately I was going to have to cancel my account. They asked me if I was happy with their service. I said "Oh yes, I'd recommend you to anybody!"

So instead of my $96 every-90-days bill, my bill is now $70. Yearly $384 to $280, savings of $104 a year. When you get an arrangement like this, make note of the name of the person you spoke to, and put it in a safe place. I usually write this information on my calendar on the day I spoke to the person. Note the time of day the discussion took place, and any other specific information - in my case, the customer service rep used the exact words: "I'll change this so you are only charged $70 from now on."

Downside: If you call saying you need to cancel an account because you can't afford it, be prepared to have your account really canceled. Don't threaten it if you don't really mean it.

TIP: You ask for a bargain only if your account is in good standing and you've never been late with a payment. They're more likely to want to keep a good long-term customer. They can afford to give good customers a discount, because good customers cost them less to service. (They don't have to hunt you down for payment). It also doesn't hurt to time your request the day after Suze Ormon has been on Oprah, telling everyone to slash their expenses to the bare bone!

Downsize your trash can

Are you inside Snellville City limits and get a bill for trash service? If you do, it's because you are getting a larger size trash can and service than you might really need.

I was paying about $26 every 3 months. I decided that we could cut down that expense by using our recycling bin more. In Snellville, you can put items in your recycling bin that are glass, or plastic items have a "1" or a "2" on them (Look for the small triangular recycling symbol on the bottom of plastic containers). I've been surprised by the number of things I've been throwing away that could be recycled. Newspapers and magazines can also be put in your recycling bin, but they must be kept dry. I put mine in plastic grocery sacks to keep them dry. You can cut down on your other trash by remembering to break down food boxes. They'll take up a lot less space that way.

Savings: $104 a year.

Eat more basic, less processed foods

This is better for your health anyway. Shop the outer edges of the grocery store first - because that's where the healthier and less expensive foods are. It doesn't have to be harder to eat this way. See this recipe for Oven Chicken Packets in my recipe blog. It's relatively inexpensive for the food value, and you don't even have to dirty a dish! Most of the recipes in that blog are really easy and inexpensive. You can also see what's on sale, look at the list of ingredients on the recipe blog, and fix meals based on what's on sale that week.

This is all I can think of right now, if you have any tips, please leave a comment! I'm always looking for more ideas!
