Snellville Trash Pick Up - WHAT is the deal?!?

Have you wondered why the trash guys from Robertson's Sanitation won't pick up that extra trash bag that you had set beside your trash bin? Did you think they were sight impaired or just lazy?

So the next pickup day, you decided to put the extra trash bag on TOP of your trash bin. The trash guys just picked it up and set it down on the ground and left it....the same amount of energy it would have taken them to just throw it into the truck!

So you got extra annoyed and just mutter about how nobody does their job anymore. Well guess what....yes, they actually WERE doing their job!

If your trash does not fit inside the trash bin, then it is not going to be picked up. The solution is to buy the special blue trash bags - available for approximately $25 for a box full of them. You buy them at Publix or Kroger. You buy them at the Customer Service desk. "twenty five bucks for a box of plastic trash bags!!" you shout in disgust...

Well no...the price isn't for the trash bags...technically. It's for the extra trash pickup service associated with the bags. I like to think of it as 'postage' for my trash.

It used to be here in Snellville that you had a choice of BFL or Robertson's Sanitation to pick up your trash. BFL was a bit more pricey, but their trucks were cleaner and drove more safely through the neighborhood, so I went with them. Now Robertson's has the contract with the City of Snellville for waste removal. It is nice that the pickup is 'free' (the cost is in our homeowner taxes I suppose). It's no extra payment if you can get all your trash in a bin. I went for the larger bin, so it costs me $25 per Quarter. Once I get my youngest two children out of Pull Ups and diapers, I'm going to try to downsize our trash bin so I won't have to pay the $25.

Oh but back to the blue trashbags. You can put your trash in them, or you can tie them to a larger item you want to dispose of. We don't have a large item disposal day like some cities. Just attach some blue bags to your item and they'll pick it up. A piece of furniture takes about 3 bags, a refrigerator you might want to call the city and ask, but I'm guessing 5 bags on something big like that.

Don't want to pay for the bags? You can deliver and drop off the item(s) yourself at the Snellville Recycling Center. It's located in the back area of Briscoe Park off of Lenora Church Road in Snellville.

  1. So quick question... we live in Snellvile, in Norris Lake. Should we be paying for trash??? :) thanks!

  2. Scooter and Emi, thank you for visiting my blog. You must be very talented babies! Since you are children just waiting for your chompers to come in (bless ya!) you shouldn't pay for trash pickup, even though you probably DO create a lot of trash with your diapers and such. However, for this next part, get mommy or daddy...ok. Are they there yet?

Go get them hunny...ok...they're with you now?

Ok...hmmm I'm trying to remember where Norris Lake is, but if you are within the city limits of Snellville, you do not have a separate bill for trash at ALL.

BUT, if you are a huge garbage producing family like ours, you might want to splurge on the bigger trash can, and that WILL run you about $100 a year, payable each quarter at around $25 each payment.

Or, you can just go with the basic 'free' trash can level and use the blue trash bags for any 'spillover' amounts of trash you have to throw away, for lack of a better word.
THe reason I call the basic trash pickup 'free' is that you don't receive a separate billing for trash pickup unless you need the larger bin, but technically the basic bin pickup IS in your City of Snellville taxes.

    Good luck on those teeth!
If you have any other questions about Snellville, just throw them my way, I've been here 13 years now. If I don't know the answer, chances are I can harass someone who will tell us.

  3. FYI - Snellville no longer "offers the service" of paying extra for the larger can.

Unbeknownst to my husband, he thought he was doing a good thing by calling in to order a new trashcan when one of the wheels kept falling off our older can. It was replaced with one of the "free" cans which is less than ample for my family of 5.

Paying for extra bags is hardly a good solution, especially in the summertime, when meat by products are included in household trash.

We awoke to birds pecking at our overflowing trash can on Monday morning. I suppose they were feeding on the ants and maggots that were feeding on our trash.

It is both disgusting and unhealthy. But, what can we do, as Snellville no longer provides larger cans for an average family?

  4. Kathy, that is awful that we can't upgrade to larger anymore! Thanks for letting me know though...wow, when my trash can's wheels fall off, I guess I will become a repair person first! Dang!

I do have an idea about your food trash...freeze it and then pull it out to put in the blue trash bag first thing in the morning.

PS We keep getting maggots in our trash can too - I really hate it. Needs to be washed out and I can totally relate to you, with a large family (I have 4 kids) the trash is never ending! Add to the problem I have two in diapers/pull ups. Yuck.

Here is an idea folks, cut down on your trash, compost your left over food and produce. Do the responsible thing when it comes to diapers and stop using disposables this will reduce over 6000 diapers going into a landfill for just one child, if you have to use disposables use Seventh Generation which are biodegradable and won't pollute the earth, not to mention non toxic to your child.

Last but not least teach your kids responsible recycling and drop your stuff off at Dekalb Farmers Market. This will also greatly reduce the quantity of garbage you are getting rid of.

For large items post them on FreeCycle or Craigslist and that way people will come pick them up for you free of charge and better yet they won't end up in a landfill.

    Help Keep our earth clean.
