Letter from our local food bank director

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the many clients of the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, I extend gratitude to you for your continued prayers, support, presence, and interest in this ministry.

Many families continue to seek assistance through the Co-op. During 2010, we have seen an average of 600 families each month. Approximately 20% are first time visitors to the Co-op. These families represent about 1,500 adults and 1,000 children. Truly, we are seeing the fallout from months of financial strain due to our sluggish economy.

Yes, the children we serve attend your child's school. Yes, they are in your child's homeroom. Yes, their parents look like me and yes, they look like you. Many of these families have lived off of savings that has now run dry. Many parents have done without, so that their children can have a warm meal on the table.

We know full well that the food and finances we provide are a temporary respite from a struggle that can seem to engulf those involved. But we also know full well that we are here to serve the Lord. We are here to point others to that Eternal Hope, which is Jesus Christ. To that place where, despite outward circumstances, "it is well with my soul."

As of Friday, March 05, 2010, we have depleted our resources for client assistance. Wow! It has been amazing. We have distributed over $50,000 in utility and prescription assistance this year.

It has been a while since the "No Financial Assistance Today" sign has been hung outside the door. We actually had to dig to find it!

Hopefully real soon we will be able to lose it again!!
May God Bless You All.

Serving Christ with you,
Laura Drake - Director

Snellville "CAN-Do" Hunger Initiative

SNELLVILLE, GA – At the “B at the Movies” event held at T.W. Briscoe Park on August 29th, the City of Snellville collected canned goods as part of the “Can Do for Hunger” initiative sponsored by the Gwinnett Municipal Association (GwMA).

GwMA consists of 14 member cities in Gwinnett County and is committed to fostering better cooperation among the cities of Gwinnett. Attendees of the Snellville movie event contributed 105 various food items for the initiative. These items were then donated to the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry located off Highway 78 East behind Community of Grace Church.

The Southeast Gwinnett Co-op serves people who reside in 30078, 30039, 30017, and Gwinnett 30052 zip codes.

Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer had the opportunity to deliver the food and receive a tour of the Co-op’s facility from the director, Laura Drake. “They have a nice set-up here,” remarked Mayor Oberholtzer. “This is really great.”

For more information about the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, call 770-985-5229. The Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative ministry (food bank) also has a new website at www.segwinnettcoop.org

Food Bank Needs Your Help!

The Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative needs some willing hands to help sort, count, and move cans of food.
  • Thursday, August 28th from 12 pm-3 pm.
The Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative is located at 1200 Athens Highway, Grayson GA 30017. It's located behind the Community of Grace Church. The church has the food stored in a hall that needs to be cleared to make room for weekend church activities. The food needs to be moved to the two trailers behind the church. The good news here is that everyone has been so giving that they actually have had this overflow of food, and that's a blessing! But now it needs to be moved where it needs to go...email new coop director, Laura Drake at ldrake[AT]segwinnettcoop.org if you can help!
  • There will also be a volunteer information meeting on Wednesday, September 3rd from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm. The informational meeting will be at the same location, except it will be in the trailers behind the church.
Please note that there is not an entrance from US78. You must turn next to the Twisted Throttle Motorcycle Shop and that will bring you around to the entrance.

Please see Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Squidoo Page for more information about the Co-op.

Southeast Gwinnett Coop Food List

I finally received the list of items needed by the Southeast Gwinnett Coop (food bank).

I decided to make yet another Squidoo page - this time on the Southeastern Gwinnett Co-op, to get the word out about what is needed.

You can see the page here: LINK
Any income that is made from that page will go automatically to charity.
Please help by sharing the page (there are links on the right side of the page to easily share/email the page with friends and family)

The entire list of the food that they need is listed on that page and I will update it as I receive new information. Snellville United Methodist Church will have collection bins in the church until Sunday March 16th (there are several of the bins, but the one easiest to find is near the church office.)

The church office is on the side of the church nearest Krystal's. Look for the carport-looking thing - you can pull up right there and bring the donations into the building.
