Kidsignments Consignment Sale
The sale has 1,000 sellers, and there is so much stuff that they need two buildings at the Fairgrounds to hold it all when the sale first starts.
If you are interested in selling or buying at the Kidsignments sale this year, I have collected information about the sale on a Squidoo page here. I have both bought and sold at the sale which is held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds twice each year.

I love children's consignment and learned of this just recently.
ReplyDeleteIn response to the vast recalls of 2007, (97% of recalls from China) congress passed a law to update new lead standards, HR 4040 or CPSIA of 2008. This law will take effect on 02/10/2009. As of a mother of two, I am all for safety. However, because the bill was written in such broad terms, there will be many negative effects for small businesses. The new law calls for the testing of each component on any child's item including clothing, bibs, toys, books, etc. by a government accredited lab. The problem with this law is it includes American makers of toys and clothing, who were never the problem with the recalls. For instance: grandpa who makes wooden wagons for children in his garage to supplement his fixed income, will be held accountable for the same testing as massed produced plastic toys from China. The testing can cost anywhere from $500-several thousand dollars. This also means stay at home moms who sew and place children's hair bows, dresses, or blankets and sells them on etsy.com will also have to have each competent of her product tested. This is going to drive many, many individuals out of business.
In addition, the law has been retroacted to include items manufactured before 02/10/2009. The same toys that were safe for you to purchase on 02/09/2009, will be banned hazardous the next day. These items must be taken off shelves, unless they are tested for the new lead guidelines. It will be a felony ($100,000 per item or jail time) to sell, resell, or even donate items deemed hazardous. Yes, this means children's consignment stores, sales, even a parent selling on craigslist will be unable to do so as of 02/10/09. This is not a safety issue for children, it is just a poorly written law. The retroaction of the new lead standards does not keep children from hazardous products because you can purchase the same toys until 02/10/08.
As far as larger corporations, who have millions of dollars in current inventory will have to pay to have it all tested. Richard Woldenberg of Learning Resources, estimates it will cost his company $20 million dollars to test his perfectly safe inventory. This will drive him completely out of business. Also, most companies use their inventory as collateral for bank loans. As of 02/10/09, this collateral will be useless causing defaulted bank loans. This has the potential to cause another major ripple in an already floundering economy.
The crazy thing, so many people do not know of this law or many think it can't be true since it obviously lacks all common sense. I am absolutely for new safety regulations, however, I believe this law needs to be amended. It is becoming more and more difficult for Americans to have their own business because of laws written in response to the infractions of large corporations. Please check out some of the following links or google CPSIA, HR 4040, Section 101 of CPSIA, or The Falvey Opinion. Most of the links I have provided include a way to write or contact your elected officials. If you enjoy consignment, hand made items, or supporting what few small businesses are left, please do not ignore this. And please pass the word around!
