More Regulations Proposed for Crematory

Snellville City Council member Kelly Kautz made a motion during Monday evening's council meeting for the City of Snellville to enact an ordinance to regulate and measure the emissions that are released from the Cremation Society of the South facility at US78 and Abington Road. The motion was seconded by Council Member Warren Auld. The new ordinance would apply to this crematorium and all future facilities of this type within Snellville's city limits.

Looks to me that this will serve two purposes:
  • It will alleviate the fears of residents that the emissions from the crematory are harmful. Yay! This will free us up to smoke cigarettes on our front porches without worrying!
  • It will eventually raise the taxes of all residents, because the money to pay for all these new regulations has to come from somewhere.
I think Kautz and Auld mean well on this issue -- I really do. I think they are trying to negotiate a resolution that will help their constituents feel better about all the mess-ups at City Hall.

But in my opinion, to create more regulations just opens up a big can of worms and more cost to 18,000 residents to make perhaps 1,000 of those residents happier. Good investment? What do you think?

  1. Well, I don't know all the details, but since you asked: I think your idea that "regulations cost money" is wrong, and that the idea that 18,000 residents have to pay in order to keep 1,000 residents happier is short-sighted.

Currently, there are NO regulations or inspections of crematoriums (crematoria?) in Georgia. Remember Ray Brent Marsh and the Tri-state Crematory in Noble, Georgia about 6 years ago? How'd you like THAT in Snellville?

This facility is in a residential neighborhood, and emissions don't stop at zoning boundaries, streets or city limits. Even if you support putting crematoriums in neighborhoods, you should at least demand they be inspected for potential health hazards.

    Mike (mtheory),

You claim to be a consultant but you provide false information and even state, "Well, I don't know the details..."

If you don't know the details, let me inform you.

Fact: Crematories are regulated and inspected bi-annually by the State of Georgia. Source: www.sos.state.ga.us/plb/funeral

Fact: This company was the ONLY funeral provider ASKED to be an expert witness on the Tri-State Crematory Trial.

Fact: If a business desired to disrespect the deceased, they would not have chosen such a public location.

Fact: The property is NOT in a neighborhood. The property is zoned for commecial use by the City of Snellville and has been zoned for this use since 2006. The OP crematory zoning has been on the books since 2001.

Fact: This society is the most respected society in the State of Georgia with over 12,000 living members. How about they unleash those members on your politicians.

Fact: Look at the well known families they serve. Do you think Atlant'a most famous and successful families would choose a company that was not validated.

Fact: The company does not cremate for others and only serves the public directly with no middle-men. Tri-State was a third-party crematory for over one hundred funeral homes.

Fact: There are no hazards from crematory emissions. Source: EPA.gov

If we put this crematory in an industrial park 10 miles down the road on 5 acres and away from neighborhoods, would you be happy? and your so-called arguements of emissions would go away? You can twist any arguement to your favor right?

Fact: There are two funeral homes on Hwy 78 that were near homes when they were built. Over time, the money from commerical valuations motivated the home owners enough to sell their properties. There is another funeral home on Wisteria Drive. All subcontract cremations...

Fact: The water quality in the area is challenged due to all of those rotting bodies in the City Cemetery and that cemetery on Hwy 78.

Fact: There are greater risks from emissions from the 36,000 cars a day that travel on Hwy 78. Oh my God what about our kids now?

Mike, I would remove the link to your name and company if you plan on gaining clients. You are fast to give opinions without any of the facts. Hey,,, maybe you and the politicians get along great since you both speak before doing some research.

I just want to say that I do think that Kautz and Auld mean well. I think they are playing political games with Chris Nuzum's property rights to cover their political backsides now that they realize that the local neighbors are not happy.
