Caricature of Marcy by Darla Dixon |
At first, I thought it was just part of the festivities. Although the roast included a lot of jokes (mostly about Marcy's petite stature), the surprise meeting and resolution were absolutely real. The City of Snellville's Volunteer of the Year Award has been renamed the Marcy Pharris Volunteer of the Year Award.
Council member Tod Warner stated that he believed that even though there were many volunteers in attendance at the evening's event, if all the volunteer hours those folks put in in a years' time were added up, the sum would probably not come close to the number of hours Ms. Pharris volunteers.
If you haven't met Marcy yet, look for her at the Snellville Farmers' Market when it opens on May 14th or one of the following Saturday mornings. She'll probably be helping people cross Oak Road, wearing an orange safety vest with the words "OKEY DOKIE" emblazoned across the back in white -- just one of the many gifts given to her in jest throughout the evening. Why "Okie dokie?" Because that's her standard response whenever asked to do anything in service of the city.
