Rough storms slam Snellville area, lightning causes house fire

In Snellville, some rough storms came for a visit during the late afternoon yesterday, ending by about 8 p.m. Fortunately, there were no reports of serious injuries in any part of the metro Atlanta area. Despite a devastating house fire on Tree Lane in Snellville, the family was able to avoid injury, and the family dog was able to exit the home 2 hours after the fire started.

In Snellville, lightning left a home a total loss. Luckily the people inside got out unharmed.

"Lightening did hit the house. We believe the fire was burning up in the attic. In fact, a really intense fire in the attic when the firetrucks arrived at the scene," said Captain Tommy Rutledge of Gwinnett County Fire.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Firefighters watched hot spots at a Snellville home Tuesday morning after lightning struck the house the night before.

A dangerous weather system brought rain, wind and hail to metro Atlanta on Monday. Resident Stephanie Garguilo was inside her home on Tree Lane with her mother when lightning struck. They said a large boom shook the house, followed by flames.

She and her mother escaped unharmed, but they said they felt helpless as they watched their home burn.
