Citizens in Snellville can send anonymous text and web tips to the Snellville PD

The Snellville Police Department has launched use of a new tool to help the police share information with the community regarding reported crime and other activity by Snellville's officers.  The new tool is called CrimeReports and offers citizens crime mapping as well as the ability to provide tips in real time or to get alerts about incidents in their neighborhood.

Observers can text information to the Snellville Police Department. "This gives the reporter the ability to send photos or videos to us of suspicious activities and/or crimes occurring," Snellville Police Chief Roy Whitehead explained.  "This service is free to citizens." Chief Whitehead continued.   "Currently, we are using drug seizure money to provide the application, but it is extremely reasonable and user friendly."

Please keep in mind that this is an additional service and is not a substitute for calling the police at 911 or 770-985-3555 to report an active crime.

Here is the press release sent out by the Snellville Police Department:

Crime Fighting Text Messaging Tip Service Launched by Snellville Police Department

(Snellville) – For the first time, mobile phone users can provide anonymous crime fighting tips to the Snellville Police Department. The service, called TipSoft, allows citizens to send anonymous tips online or by sending a text message to “CRIMES” (274637) with the keyword “SNELLPD” from a mobile phone.

“The widespread use of text messaging makes it easy for the public to help law enforcement agencies fight crime,” said Chief Roy Whitehead. “And with TipSoft, they can know that it’s safe for them to do the right thing without ever disclosing their identity.

TipSoft, which is made by CrimeReports, allows agencies and members of the public to have a two-way dialog that is completely secure and anonymous. The service specifically allows text message providers to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages, assigning them a unique alias and ID, and routing them through secure servers, protecting the personal details of the information provider.

“The Snellville Police Department is demonstrating its commitment to the public and to public safety by using technology to prevent, reduce and solve crime,” says Greg Whisenant, founder and CEO of CrimeReports. “With TipSoft, agencies can invite the public to take an active role in making their communities safer.”

Citizens are encouraged to use TipSoft to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or in schools.
