IMHO, there should be a referendum. Let the *voters* of Snellville decide this issue once and for all.

  2. You know why they are appealing rather than having a referendum? It's not only a time issue (that's part of it) but I'm sure if it came up for a vote, the ministers would advise their parishioners to vote against it...and that could potentially be a poor outcome for those in favor of Sunday sales passing. However, ministers preached against the Georgia Lottery and that still passed as we all know.

  3. I would suggest they are appealing because the city believesit is on solid ground with its ruling and disagree with the judge's decision. I would also submit the appeal and the initial call for a stay is an expedient way to allowing those 7 restaurants which enjoyed the revenues from Sunday Sales in recent weeks to continue while the city does the due-diligence of the appeals process and explores the necessity of a potential referendum this summer.

The voters already voted on this; and it passed.

    Steve...

There WAS a referndum way back in 2004 and the voters voted approves liquor sales AND sunday pouring. A few on the City council at the time felt the citizens really didnt know what they voted for and inserted their personal agenda into the ordinance as opposed to simply following the wording in the referendum. Inother words they IGNORED the will of the people (keep in mind these same guys voted NOT to allow the people to decide the issue at all )and inserted their own views

  5. I'm for the appeal, let's see how that turns out. If that doesn't work out, then we vote. Either way works fine for me.

Gail is right on the money.
The majority of the City Council is trying to do the right thing and protect our businesses, allowing them to employ more citizens and attract more business. Snellville has lost Millions of Dollars in the last 5 years over this issue, not only in revenue, but in lost businesses, empty storefronts that have not been maintained, and the lack of viability as a destination for new restaurants and retail establishments.

This Judge's decision is a minor setback to an issue with an inevitable conclusion. Our job is to minimize the negative effect of that decision on our City.

If this issue divides the city as a few are saying then why are their no stop Sunday Sales in Snellville petitions or FB site? The answer is simple, a lack of support! and a sight like that would verify it to the world.
This is Snellville politics at its lowest form.

I may end up being a one term councilman, but I will at least spend that term doing what is right for the City. I ran to put an end to the pawn shops and the other less desirable retailers. To do that you have to:

    1. KNOW you deserve better than that!

    2. We must make e EVERY effort to raise the desirability of Snellville!

    3. We must market Our City to the type of businesses we want to attract!

I am passionate in what I believe in, and I believe in Snellville. Great things are happening in Snellville, things that can not be stopped by the obstructionist.

We are developing committees of citizens who want to see our quality of life improve, they, along with the city, are developing initiatives to accomplish that.

I believe we have a majority on Council who not only want to see the quality of life improve dramatically but are also willing to engage as many people as possible in the process, with the promise that we will stay the course and put politics aside to make their endeavors and hard work become successful. Unlike some members in our body this is not about politics. to adapt an old saying to fit our current circumstance.
    Its about Snellville stupid!
I encourage anyone who has an opinion on this issue or Snellville in general to contact me at twitts@snellville.org. I will listen!!!

As a member of the Snellville Planning Commission, I consider issues in terms of what's best for the city and its residents. Reviewing the controversy surrounding Sunday sales of alcoholic beverages in this context, it's obvious that allowing such sales is in the best interest of city residents. It will increase economic activity, potentially create new jobs and serve as an engine for future growth. If some residents are opposed to consuming alcohol on Sunday, or any other day, the solution is simple- they shouldn't do it. However, they should not attempt to force others to abide by their personal beliefs. Prohibiting sales of alcohol because of religious beliefs is no different than banning the sale of beef or pork for the same reasons. The core of this issue doesn't speak to religion or economics, it speaks to personal freedoms. I'm sincerely grateful to the mayor and most members of the City Council for defending those freedoms.
