Snellville Plans Community Garden

Volunteer committee plans a community space for nutrition and fellowship.

Snellville, Ga. – A community garden is in the planning stages in the city of Snellville. City residents Gretchen and Kurt Schulz are organizing a committee of volunteers to oversee the development and construction of the garden. Briscoe Park is the garden's anticipated location. It will consist of raised beds that will be planted and maintained by individuals or small groups such as a family, neighbors, friends, or students.

The organizers hope that the garden will not only provide gardeners with nutritious food, but that it will also serve as a source of recreation, exercise and education.  "We also hope the garden will be a catalyst for building community pride as well as enriching family ties and friendships," Gretchen Schulz said.

Barbara Bender, the city's former mayor pro tem, is among those working with the organizing committee.  "I am so excited to be a part of another venture to further increase the connection of our Snellville community." Bender said.

Garden plots will be available for rent on an annual basis. There will be a plot rental fee to cover expenses for garden maintenance.  Garden organizers are hoping to secure business sponsors within the community to help with garden construction, including site preparation and building materials for the raised beds.

The project, which is still in the early phase of development, will be another community project organized by volunteers.  "I can't wait to see what our talented group of volunteers is going to create as Snellville's community garden,” said council member Tom Witts. "It will certainly be something that will make us proud, that I assure you." Witts plans to work with the group.
