First City Clerk of Snellville has died

Betty McMichael, Snellville's first full-time City Clerk has died at age 79. For 20 years, she was considered the face of Snellville. If her name seems familiar to you, there is a meeting room at Briscoe Park that was named in her honor.

In 1969, she became Snellville's first full-time city clerk, doing everything from answering residents' questions to processing bill payments. ...

“You went to Betty when you had a question, because she was a one-stop shop,” said Emmett Clower, a former city mayor. “When (residents) went in to ask a question, that’s who they saw for several years.”

McMichael died Friday at the age of 79. Her funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel, 3705 U.S. Highway 78 W., Snellville. Interment will follow at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens.

Donations may be made in memory of McMichael to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 672648, Marietta, GA 30006.
