It's estimated that nearly 40,000 vehicles pass through Snellville on US78 daily. Some nearby businesses had to be evacuated, including the Quik Trip and the Waffle House Restaurant.
Traffic was a difficult for drivers this morning. Alternate routes were suggested for commuters driving east and west, which caused traffic back ups on Pinehurst Drive. Roads such as Temple Johnson, Summit Chase, and Rosebud Road saw a large increase in traffic as commuters sought out alternate routes in and out of Snellville. It was particularly challenging for drivers going west - they were backed up all the way to Cooper Road in Grayson.
Gas could be smelled for miles in this area of south Gwinnett County. For most of the residents of Snellville, the wind seemed to be in their favor, blowing westerly toward Loganville.
As a safety precaution, power was cut to many homes and businesses near the break. Whenever feasible, Snellville Police Department called businesses in advance of cutting off their power.
By 11:30 a.m., the intersection reopened.
