Things to do in Snellville

I have so much fun asking a question of My Snellville Blog's fans on Facebook, and the great replies I get there. Yesterday, I asked what are some fun and/or almost free things to do in Snellville? Many of these ideas came from the Facebook Fan page members. I will add to this blog post as I hear about more things to do. I'm sure I missed some.
  • Take a walk in the park or downtown.
  • Frisbee golf at Alexander Park (near Sugarloaf Parkway and Hwy 124) or Disc Golf at Lenora Church Park on Lenora Church Road in Snellville. (But you need to bring your own Frisbee) If you really get into this, you can check out the Gwinnett Disc Golf Organization.
  • If you think Bud and Miller Beers are for sissies, you might enjoy hanging with the Snellville Beer Society. They meet at the Wayside Tavern.
  • Look at the original art lining the walls at Snellville Framing and Fine Art. The art is by local artists and can be purchased, but you can go in and look any time! The store is near the corner of US78 and Scenic Hwy - it's on the side of the plaza that faces Scenic Hwy (by the donut place around the corner from Provino's Italian Restaurant.)

I'm ready to be profiled - press 2 for English

The ACLU of Georgia has accused Gwinnett of using racial profiling against Hispanics.

Yes, we are profiling, if profiling means that criminals get their immigration status checked. If you ask me, the profiling should begin at the border. If 40-ish, white women with eyeglasses and big feet are found to go into Mexico illegally and commit crimes, then I expect Mexico to profile me.

Mexico is another country, not my country, and Mexico has the right to profile me. I don't go to other countries and tell them what to do or make demands as if I'm a citizen there. I don't go to another country illegally and expect them to support me and educate my children while I can send my money back to America.

But go through the steps to be here legally, I'll back you 100% and be glad to do it. I don't expect you to want to be an American citizen, I just ask that you be legal and accounted for - just like I am. If you came to America illegally and wanted to get legal, I'd help you find the right government office and I'd help you fill out the paperwork.

Pawn shop stirs opposition in Snellville
Atlanta Journal Constitution
By Shane Blatt Battle lines are being drawn in Snellville over a proposal by a local pawn shop owner to relocate and build a 5,500-square-foot facility on US ...

The Snellville City Council is expected to vote on the matter, likely in front of a packed house, at its 7:30 p.m. meeting today at City Hall.

The most vocal opposition comes from residents in the Summit Chase subdivision, which sits about 4,100 feet from the proposed site near U.S. 78 and Grayson Parkway.

People aren't happy that this establishment will sell guns. But you know, Wal-Mart sells guns too. I'm not a fan of the small, poorly run pawn shops - and I certainly don't want one on every corner in Snellville, but this is larger, and if it's a nice establishment, and Council Member Tod Warner is in support of it, it could be a good addition and a draw to Snellville. It could be very good for Snellville's economy. I beg of you to keep an open mind and learn the facts before you attend the City Council meeting tonight, and be polite.

School K-12 standards are now available for public comment

Common Core Curriculum Standards

As part of the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI), the draft K-12 standards are now available for public comment. These draft standards, developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, seek to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce. This is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The college- and career-readiness standards were previously released for public comment in September 2009.

These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs. The standards are designed to be:
  • clear, understandable, consistent and aligned with college and work expectations
  • evidence-based
  • framed with rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills
  • informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society
Public comment on the K-12 common core standards is available until Friday, April 2. All interested educators, students and community members may participate in the public comment survey. Both the common core standards and the public input survey are accessible at www.corestandards.org.

Snellville comes together for a cause

I am sad to share that Alex lost his courageous battle with leukemia the morning of July 15,2010. Our condolences to Alex's family.

The "Yard Sale for a Cause" to benefit Snellville teen Alex Blaker and his family was a huge success, writes Alex's grandmother, Joyce Morgan. The sale was held in the parking lot of Snellville Animal Hospital yesterday.

"The Yard Sale for a cause was a great success, we raised close to 2,000 dollars for Alex Blaker and his mom Michele (Shelly). There will be another fund raiser in about 2 weeks and I don't have the address right now of the lady who is letting us use her garage and yard.

Thank you again Darla for putting in the announcement in the blog. Alex and Mom could not attend because Alex was admitted into the hospital on Thursday.
Hopefully he will be able to come home in a few days.

God bless you!

In Christ's Love

I killed my car battery!

Jerome Stokes, General Manager of Snellville's Auto Zone Store replacing my car battery. I just love to have other people do manual labor for me while I stand around and snap photos. It's a gift.

I freely admit that it's my fault. I was sitting in the car yesterday, waiting for my daughter for about a half hour. You know how you can turn the key in the ignition switch one notch and be able to listen to the radio? Apparently I went a little further than that first notch (or maybe I bumped it...hey there's a chance I'm not stupid, and I'm clinging to that.)

By the title of this blog post you already know - the car battery was dead. Deader than Dead-Dead E. McDead at a Grateful Dead festival. Finally my daughter arrived and was ready to go. I call Hubs, and he came out to jump the battery.

The battery has lived its full life. It will no longer hold the jump charge. Time to go to the great battery recycling center in the sky (eyes mist.)

So I called AutoZone in Snellville and spoke to Jerome. He asked me a few questions about my car and could tell me that they had it in stock. You see, if I drove to the store and turned off the car to walk into the store to then find out it was out of stock, I wouldn't be able to drive away again. Luckily, they had it in several different price options. Jerome said to come on over, they would put the battery in at no charge. So that's what I did. It was very easy and quick.

If you need a car battery, check out Snellville's AutoZone. Most batteries have 2 and 3 year warranties, and even if your battery fails you while traveling, any AutoZone location can look up your account by your phone number and see if your warranty is still in effect. Auto Zone also offers free testing of batteries, starters, and alternators.

If you need a gift for a guy, ladies - this is where you need to go! I couldn't believe the amount of clever gadgets and stuff guys would like. I'm set for next time I need a 'guy gift.'

I have not been compensated in any way for this blog post. I go to places, and if they are nice to me and I'm pleased with their service, they're going to get some free promo here on the blog from me. I also sent the link to this blog post to AutoZone's corporate office. Seems the least I can do.

Here is AutoZone's contact info:

Rumors of gangs at South Gwinnett High School

Here is an update on the cancellations of some after-school activities at South Gwinnett High School. When I called the school about it, I had a bit of a hint that there was suspicion of gang activity, but I think the media blows these situations out of proportion a bit.

To read these news articles, you'd think that every kid at the school is some kind of gang thug. I can tell you as a parent who has visited the school numerous times, the majority of students there are very nice and polite.

I've had students happily help me find my way around, and have even had young men open the door for me without being asked. How often do you see that from high school kids? How often do you see that from adults?!

Snellville & Gwinnett blocked from state funding

If you were looking for good news this morning, because this ain't it!
GWINNETT COUNTY, GA-- Gwinnett County and 15 cities are now on a list that prevents them from receiving any state funding, loans or permits as they continue ...

The cities involved are: Auburn , Berkeley Lake, Buford, Dacula, Duluth, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville, Norcross, Rest Haven, Snellville, Sugar Hill, Suwanee and Braselton.

Now, in the toughest sanction to date, Gwinnett County and 15 cities are listed with the state as no longer eligible as a "Qualified Local Government". That means any state money, grants, loans or even permits will not be passed on to those goverments until they work out an acceptable Service Delivery Strategy.

South Gwinnett locked down, canceled after school activities yesterday

My daughter was supposed to stay after school yesterday, but she said that the teachers had received an email from the administration to sweep the kids out of the school. All after-school programs were canceled for the day.

I called the school and found out what happened. The good news is that everyone is okay, there was no emergency. However, there is an ongoing issue the school is managing.

After school each day, hundreds of students without a valid purpose to still be at the school will hang around, in and outside the school buildings. The principal had heard that people from outside the school were joining this group of loiterers. If it's after school hours, then the teens are not supervised. Anytime you have a bunch of teenagers unsupervised, and add even more people to the mix who shouldn't be there is just going to breed trouble.

If anything happens at the school that is negative, of course the media is going to pick up on it and it makes the school look bad. The closure was to keep anything bad from happening on school property.

The close down involved holding the buses for 10 minutes to allow everyone who should be on a bus to get on one. Getting everyone out of the school enabled the administration to identify how many were there that should not be, and to move them away from school property. Every day, the school staff has to conduct a "sweep" of all the buildings, from Building D to Building E, to move all the people toward the school's Commons area. On most days, there are about 200 in the Commons area by the end of the sweep.

The school does have an after-school program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:30 to 5:30 pm that provides snacks and tutoring. However, the loitering teens aren't interested in that. I think that maybe it's sort of like teens who stroll at the mall, to see and be seen. These teens don't have access to a 'cool' place like a mall, so they hang out at the school.

I've got to wonder what the home life is like for these kids, if they'd rather hang out at school than go home. What is happening at their house?

Society wants to label teens as uncontrollable animals, but they are just kids in adult-sized bodies. They need guidance, they need a safe place to be, and they need parents who are up to the task of raising them and providing a home that they want to return to.

Parking at South Gwinnett High School is an adventure

This morning, I took my daughter to school late, because she wasn't feeling well. I felt again the frustration that visiting South Gwinnett High School involves. It's not the fault of the school staff, it's just that the school has had so many additions since it opened in 1957, that it's now completely FUBAR, and I mean that in the literal sense of the acronym (look it up.)

Gwinnett gets ready for 2010 Census

Above: My Census envelope. They actually care where bloggers live! Ahhhh!!!

Did you get the letter from the Census office telling you to look for the Census itself? I had to mull that one over in my mind for a while. Seems like government waste to me (not the Census, but the letter.)

The only reason for it that I could come up with is that perhaps it helps reassure people that when they do receive the Census, it's the real thing, and not a scam of some sort. Maybe it prevents mass confusion and phone calls to government offices. But I don't know. Still seems unnecessary to send out those letters.

According to the US Census Bureau's Twitter page (yes, they really have one!):

"
$85 mil spent to print/mail advance letter & reminder postcard. Effect on response rates could save over $500 million."

Do you plan to answer the Census, or are you like Neil Boortz and think it's a way for The Government to spy on you or boost Democratic ballots?

I do plan to fill out the Census. I don't think there was a huge government conspiracy in 1850 and 1900 when my ancestors filled out their Census forms, and I don't think there's a conspiracy now. Even a garden club needs to take a roll call once in awhile. Because my family answered the Census, I know a lot more about them.

The Family Tree Garden Center has opened in the old Pike's Nursery location on US78 in Snellville. I visited the store yesterday with my daughter. It's a very nice store! Here are my photos, taken at risk of embarrassing my teenage daughter.
Conversation before we left:

Me: "Should I take my digital camera, or just use the camera in my cell phone?"

Daughter: "Use your cell phone's camera, it's good enough, and you're going to be embarrassing enough already with that."

Family Tree Garden Center also has a Facebook page here - If you join their page as a fan, they regularly post "secret words" that you can tell the cashier to get valuable discounts. From the Facebook page, click on Photos to see more photos of the garden center.

The Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry is in need of the following items. Financial donations are also welcome. They also need Home Depot gift cards.

Cereal - Jelly - Fruit - Spaghetti Sauce - Rice - Dried Beans - Canned Milk - Pork n Beans - Tuna / Salmon - Chili - Grits - Baking Mix - Powdered Milk - All vegetables - Vegetable Oil - Ketchup - Mayonnaise - Salad Dressing - Peanut Butter - Soup - Flour/Sugar - Crackers - Laundry Detergent

If you want to make an easy donation, many of our local Snellville churches have convenient drop off bins. I know Snellville United Methodist and Westminster Presbyterian both have the bins. If you have a business and would have room for hosting a donation bin, simply get in touch with the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, and they will get the bin to you.

Letter from our local food bank director

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the many clients of the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, I extend gratitude to you for your continued prayers, support, presence, and interest in this ministry.

Many families continue to seek assistance through the Co-op. During 2010, we have seen an average of 600 families each month. Approximately 20% are first time visitors to the Co-op. These families represent about 1,500 adults and 1,000 children. Truly, we are seeing the fallout from months of financial strain due to our sluggish economy.

Yes, the children we serve attend your child's school. Yes, they are in your child's homeroom. Yes, their parents look like me and yes, they look like you. Many of these families have lived off of savings that has now run dry. Many parents have done without, so that their children can have a warm meal on the table.

We know full well that the food and finances we provide are a temporary respite from a struggle that can seem to engulf those involved. But we also know full well that we are here to serve the Lord. We are here to point others to that Eternal Hope, which is Jesus Christ. To that place where, despite outward circumstances, "it is well with my soul."

As of Friday, March 05, 2010, we have depleted our resources for client assistance. Wow! It has been amazing. We have distributed over $50,000 in utility and prescription assistance this year.

It has been a while since the "No Financial Assistance Today" sign has been hung outside the door. We actually had to dig to find it!

Hopefully real soon we will be able to lose it again!!
May God Bless You All.

Serving Christ with you,
Laura Drake - Director

South Gwinnett High principal speaks out on gang incident

This letter from South Gwinnett High School's Principal Mr. Clay Hunter was published in a special March 12th edition of the school's newsletter. This letter is in response to the media coverage of the gang initiation beating that occurred sometime between the end of November and the Christmas holiday break. To see more information about the beating incident, see my crime blog.
Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Thursday of this week, there was an article in the newspaper about several students who were arrested for carrying out acts of violence here at South Gwinnett High School. It is unfortunate yet important to note that all of the people involved were willing participants in the act. There were no innocent victims involved. In addition, it is important to note that this incident took place last semester. It was brought to our attention by a parent. As soon as our administrators were informed of the situation they acted to find the perpetrators and issue consequences.

As you are aware, our school does not tolerate violence of any kind which is why our school leaders took immediate action. The students involved now face both criminal charges and school disciplinary action.

I want to emphasize that this event took place last semester. This is important to note because South Gwinnett began taking steps at the beginning of this semester to prevent these types of incidents from taking place again. One such step is the change in our tardy policy that limits the opportunity for students to engage in inappropriate action. This policy has also led to an increase presence of staff members in the hallways in between classes. In addition, our guidance counseling department has been working on small group counseling for students who are at-risk. Finally, I want to let you know that I have begun talks with PTSA about coordinating opportunities for parents to serve as hall monitors next year. We will be working on a plan of action and hope that we have a healthy number of parents take time to volunteer.

As you know, the vast majority of our students never get into trouble at school. They are respectful, thoughtful young people who care about their studies, their school, and each other. We firmly believe that these students should not have to tolerate disruptions from the few students who misbehave. And we are working diligently to ensure that students who do not follow the school system's discipline code face appropriate consequences. That said, know that the reports you hear about arrests or disciplinary action taken in such situations are evidence of the positive steps our school is taking to provide a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment.

As we all know there are times when community issues affect our school. This is not something unique to our school; in fact it is a national trend. However, here at South Gwinnett, we are working proactively to address these issues. The fruits of our labor can be seen in our state-wide recognition for the highest gains on the high school graduation test and an increase in the number of students who are taking Advanced Placement courses.

Know that your involvement is critical to the success of our students and our school. That is why I appreciate your continued support of our school and the efforts we take to provide a secure learning environment for our students.

Sincerely,
Clay Hunter
Principal
South Gwinnett High School

Expect an additional property tax bill

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Gwinnett homeowners with a home value of $200,000 or less will receive an additional property tax bill from 2009.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reported that most of these bills will be about $160 and are due May 15, 2010.

For more information, see this page of the Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's website.
The good news is, you can look up your address on that page, and see what you will owe. I owe $53.99 on top of the $1,415 I paid in 2009.

Farmers’ market coming to Snellville

A Saturday morning farmers’ market is coming to Snellville, beginning in June.

Throughout the cold weeks of winter, a group of 10 dedicated volunteers, including two Snellville City Council members, has been meeting regularly to focus on spring and fresh-from-the-farm produce.

The group has been making plans for a Saturday morning farmers’ market, scheduled to begin June 5, 2010. The Snellville Farmer's Market will be held weekly from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon on the grounds at Snellville City Hall 2342 Oak Road.

“We have a wonderful group of very enthusiastic volunteers,” said Barbara Bender, a member of the council who serves as mayor pro-tem and has acted as the committee’s liaison with other city officials and city staff members.

“They have been doing a lot of research, talking to people who run the farmers’ markets in other cities, and writing very comprehensive policies to ensure a great market.”

Farmers’ markets are one of the most exciting trends in America’s food-delivery system.

The markets are important because they provide local farmers with an outlet to sell food they raise directly to customers. Farmers Markets also allow consumers to buy fresh food, usually harvested within the last 24 hours.

“Snellville needs this type of fun-for-all, family-centered event on a regular basis,” said Tom Witts, a council member who has been working closely with the committee and making calls to potential vendors.

In the recruitment calls he has made, Witts has emphasized the outstanding location the Snellville market will have. “We will be right on Highway 78 where we will have great visibility,” Witts said, noting that an average of 40,000 vehicles pass City Hall each day.

The market will focus on fresh produce, but the committee is also courting vendors who sell meats, eggs, cheese, artisan breads and other baked goods, jams and jellies, honey and fresh flowers.

A limited number of craft vendors will be approved to participate in the market, with a focus on crafts handcrafted from natural ingredients, such as soaps and lotions.

Booths are priced at $10 per week or $175 for the 22-week season, which will go through October.

Local non-profit civic, church and school groups may be approved to participate at no cost, but will not be allowed to sell any products that compete with the paying vendors.

“We still have some available spaces for vendors,” said Witts. “I hope they will seriously consider our market because our goal is to make this a premier market. The market will be the go-to destination market.”

(Note from blogger: A "destination" market means that it will bring people into Snellville specifically FOR the farmer's market...and that will bring income to our local economy, because when people come here for the farmer's market, they'll also shop our stores, eat lunch at Snellville restaurants, etc)
Interested vendors may call Marilyn Swinney at 770-736-8332 or Marcy Pharris at 770-978-1093 for an application to participate in the market. You can also become a fan of the Snellville Farmer's Market on Facebook!

Snellville should warm up by Sunday

Our weird weather patterns continue, but this time it's news we like to hear!

After narrowly missing what could have been an icy morning commute, Atlantans can now start looking forward to a springlike weekend with temperatures well into the 60s.

Illegals from FL go to Gwinnett Courthouse to protest

What a bunch of hooey. Some students from Florida went to the Gwinnett County Courthouse to gain attention to the cause of "undocumented" (I prefer the word "ILLEGAL") immigrants. They wanted to protest Gwinnett's policy of checking criminal's citizenship.

They "faced down" Sheriff Conway in their t-shirts. Yeah right. I bet Sheriff Conway was so scared of them. (Sarcasm)

Well nice try anyway. At least they got a teensy bit of media attention for their difficult quest of driving up from Florida and walking into a courthouse. Now that they've mastered that, why not apply for proper residency status?

Snow happens

Why did we get our teenagers cell phones? Oh yeah, so they could keep in touch. Maybe we should have given that more thought.

By now, you know it snowed today. As I write this, it is snowing. All kids desperately want Gwinnett County Schools to close.

The following is a text message conversation between myself and my teenage daughter. Although I have always respected Erma Bombeck, now that I have 4 children, I realize that she really didn't have to come up with ideas so much as just write down what happened.
Omg i can get checked out?

Some schools early releasing today. Gwinnett not. You don't have 2 stay after school 2day though.

I think they're going to cancel it anyways. Its supposed to get worse later...around 5-ish.

Stay the course. There is weather all over the world.

-.- so....U want me to stand out in the snow waiting for u to come get me

School is still in session.

We're not even doing anything

I'm trying to.

Trying to what?

Trying to work.

What does that have to do w anything? lol

(No reply sent by myself - equivalent of blank stare)
